There is some potentially good news though. It seems clear that Pratt didn't get any benefits because he left town almost immediately. So it seems like it was a side deal orchestrated by McCarthy rather than a larger issue. Again this is complete speculation, but maybe Hicks never actually received an apartment, but it was discussed before Les and others knew about it.

The discussion of improper gifts could still be a violation, but obviously not as serious as a giving the benefits.

Could Pratt have showed up and DJ refused to honor the agreement causing him to leave?

Maybe Pratt showed up, but Miles/Alleva had already put a stop to McCarthy's crap, and Pratt got pissed and left. Although that still makes me wonder why McCarthy was still allowed to coach the 2009 season.

Benton going to Auburn and Pratt going to Oklahoma State make me feel a lot better about the situation, to tell you the truth.

true, but it's pretty obvious one of the players is on the roster at LSU.

the Pratt deal as i understood it was when he arrived to enroll early his papers weren't in order. he was told to stay with Scott(?) while it got worked out. someone then found his drugs and he was asked to leave. this all came out when he was busted for weed at OSU.

that really doesn't fit this situation. i guess you could say he was lined up to live in a McCarthy apartment but someone found out and nixed the deal. he got mad and left and the drug thing was a cover.

Loston and Benton are the 2 guys who have stayed in BR while they weren't yet on scholarship.

That was basically my thought.

As to why McCarthy was allowed to coach. Maybe Les thought firing him would bring a shite storm down and royally frick us. If DJ got fired now or left for another job it wouldn't be nearly as scandalous.

bc he kept dj all season and its just not good if we have assistant coaches going behind les miles back. That would seem to show a lack of control of our program if we have assistants running wild.

You're usually pretty level headed, can I get a cliffs notes version of what's been going on for the last 24 pages? Anything more definitive than what the Advocate article has? Anything more solid than message board rumor?

dj shouldn't have been recruiting at all though after this stuff was found out by les if he didn't already know when it happened

So you are telling me DJ only did this because Les "lacks control of the program"?

You're stretching.

If somebody wants to commit a violation they're going to do it. Won't matter who the coach is.

This is what I have pieced together from the facts available and trying my best to "connect the dots." Don't take it as "gospel", but from what I gather this is my summation of what I believe to be going down...

quote:

The player involved is defensive tackle Akeim Hicks, a 4-star JUCO transfer from Sacramento, California. Hicks was recruited by DJ McCarthy, and did not play at all in 2009, his first and likely only year with the LSU program.

McCarthy, who will no longer be a part of the LSU coaching staff beyond the 2009 season, was in some way involved in helping pay for Hicks’ apartment at some point in his recruitment, possibly before Hicks was even qualified and on scholarship. McCarthy was solely responsible for Hicks’ recruitment to LSU. There are also seperate allegations that McCarthy may have also arranged similar things and been involved in violations in the recruitment of Dexter Pratt and DeAngelo Benton, two recruits that eventually went to Oklahoma State and Auburn, respectively.

Upon learning of the Hicks’ situation earlier this year, Les Miles informed athletic director Joe Alleva. Alleva recommended that Miles fire McCarthy on the spot. However, Miles and Alleva decided to wait until the end of the season to let McCarthy go. As to not put LSU at further risk, LSU did not play Hicks at all in the 2009 season.

LSU is in the midst of an ongoing investigation into the matter and is working with the SEC and NCAA in resolving the issues and self-reporting of any violations.

I agree. I'm not defending Les just trying to fit everything together based on the current speculation

Good post, but the coaches were way too upfront about Loston being in Baton Rouge last winter for anything dirty to be going on, in my opinion. He was also not a McCarthy recruit.
