I have a good friend who's been a sports writer for the TP for almost 30 years. Before that he was with the Advocate. He said it was almost like the Rant in that if you didn't write glowing, suck up, "emperor's new clothes" type of articles, they'd get whacked by the editors, and you'd get temporarily banned from plum assignments. NO ANTI-LSU ARTICLES, regardless of the facts.

Yeah, those Advocate guys and most of those pretend sports talk show host were scared shitless to speak badly of LSU. They might not get to go to the press luncheons once a week for the free food.

free food.

it's amazing how important that is to sports writers, they recall and compare venues and events by how the catering is

For sports...It's the Advocate, and not even close. But for NO area HS sports its the pic.

this... if the Advocate NOLA edition started writing about NOLA HS and not about Parkview and Episcopal, i'd subscribe.

I am an LSU fan and have subscribed to both papers for a long period of time. I much prefer the Advocate for LSU coverage and for having a better overall sports section.

The TP's non-Saints coverage had gotten so skimpy, I dropped it a few years back.

I could see if you are a primarily a Saints fan, then you would prefer the TP.

The Advocate has been annoying lately with its non-stop daily front page and editorial Jindal bashing. Soon I'll subscribe to the Sports only edition. (I know - political board)

Picayune is much better. Much better national sports reporting, food/drink and restaurant stuff. Advocate is still hiring high school year book/newspaper staffers to write for them from the looks of things.

Obviously, Katrina was the beginning of the end for the Picayune. But prior to 8/2005, the Picayune was light years ahead of the Advocate...not just sports but state govt. reporting, etc. If you read both, you would always be saying " that was in Picayune yesterday" after reading the Advocate.
The Advocate has a good sports section but even it has fallen off compared to 20 - 30 years ago.
Hopefully the new ownership will make some changes.

i pick up the pic during the fall when lsu and the saints are in training camp....their daily write ups on both teams are realy good....last year i was working in br so i would pick up the advocate and i was impressed with the way they covered the saints....but i thought the pic did a better job at covering the tigers.

In the old days they had the TP and in the afternoon the States Item (Green Paper). There was the Advocate but the States Item had great articles on LSU. When they stopped the States Item and I dropped the TP. The TP was mostly the Saints and I was not interested. I would get an Advocate on Sunday during Football Season. I understand in the very old says of the Item that Hap Glaudi had a great Sports Page.

Les East is easily the most "anti" LSU guy of all the Advocate/TP LSU writers, so times have definitely changed.

Are you saying the Pic writers don't want free food, therefore, don't care about trashing LSU?

If so, you are wrong.

The Advocate is definitely going for TP's blood. Sheldon Mickles alone was good coverage of the Saints, but they have added Ted Lewis and Brian Allee-Walsh now too.

State and Advocate merged back in late 80's.

I think The Advocate is in the process of being sold. I wonder what sort of impact that is going to have.

Most people nowdays don't take a paper or pick one up. My family used to take The Advocate in the morning and the State Times in the afternoon til they stopped the Times. Not sure when it happened but it was in the early 90's I believe because I have a 1991 State Times front page.

The Advocate had every sports writer one by one write a column saying that LSU would never do any better than Gerry DiNardo so fans are stupid for wanting him fired.

Then the Advocate wrote an article on potential defensive coordinator candidates after Pelini left and they listed pros and cons of every candidate, except the only con for Doug Mallory was something to the effect of "america just hasn't had the chance to see how awesome he is yet." It was clear who LSU was hiring just from reading that pile of shite article.

i live in New Orleans and buy the Advocate on a daily basis, but i still feel as though they are not appealing to the New Orleans market enough. When you start reading it, it is pretty obvious about 75% of the news is from the Baton Rouge area, and people down here do not really care to read that much about it. So we buy Times still because it pertains to us and not Baton Rouge.
