Rummaging around came across good article on '58 Tigers. Great overview and explanation of White team, Go team & Chinese Bandits. Also, I'm astounded by the size of the players. LINK

Players were all much smaller compared to players today

It was a much different sport back then.

I was at the Bama and every home game that season...13 years old. First game the year before was Ga.Tech. What an introduction to LSU football.

I was 12 and there for three (I think) games. Comments about players is generally true except for Cannon and possibly also Johnnie Robinson. They would compete at the highest level in today's game. I suspect Max Fugler would too, but likely a different position.
Whoops, had to edit. Memory failed.
PS: Not entirely sure about some of the weights posted in here relative to what programs indicated.

My grandfather played college football, offensive lineman at 185 lbs. (Loyola)

Agree re Cannon, Robinson & Fugler; Gus Kinchen & Don Norwood were very good & had the size. Fluger played for 49ers & of course Cannon & Robinson Oilers & Cheifs. Tommy Davis (49s) was one the best punters & place kickers in NFL.

Cannon weighed as much or more than many of the lineman !

He was one of the early athletes that birthed lifting as a part of training. Dude was a rock amongst sticks.

Cannon was playing both sides of the ball. What an amazing player in his days.

My uncle played for Tulane in late 50s,
Not a big guy at all and he was a lineman

I laugh at the White team. Hell segregation made it all white.

I met Mickey Mangham years ago. Diminutive by today's standards. BTW - one helluva nice guy.

I was 11 years old and a new tiger fan. One thing I remember was Paul Dietzel declaring that he loved LSU and would never leave. That was probably after the '59 season. Then came the news he was offered his dream job coaching at Army and he was gone. I was devastated and NEVER forgave Dietzel.

Do you recall his nickname? Pepsodent Paul because he was always smiling.

Played both ways. Meaner and tougher. Smaller yes, but a helluva lot more courageous.

FrenchJoe, Paul left due to off the field issues. Our AD at the time is a legend and he kept the newspapers from headlining a story about Paul off the front page.
