3rd down quick snap shotgun run up the middle

BK loves this stupid predictable play. It sucked when JD ran it too but at least there was a threat of him pulling it if the DE crashed.
QB sneak has a much higher probability of success and even if you don’t get it on 3rd down run it again on 4th.
I wish he’d remove this from the playbook.

Doesn't work when your OL can't get a push and the TEs do not block the crashing LBs and safeties.
Instead of a 12 personnel inviting the defense to stack the box why not spread them out and run a counter?

They couldn't get a push on USC DLs. Mason Taylor is not a good blocker.

If I remember correctly they ran this quickly which left the freshman TE who can't block on the right side and he essentially whiffed on the block.

They took too long for that play to work. They tried to run it before USC got set up and ending up burning 16 seconds off the play clock before Nuss snapped it. BK should have called a TO before the play started

I get going up tempo there, but I thought it was a bad spot. Don’t think it was a 1st down, but it appeared a lot closer than where we ran the play from. I think those extra feet—and time to settle down—would have been more valuable than trying to get the play off before USC got set.

This. Pimpton whiffed the block on 3rd down which allowed USC to crash off the edge and make the play in the backfield. Pimpton made a 14yrd catch on 2nd and 15 but because we went tempo on 3rd&1, he was still on the field and was responsible for sealing the edge. He's got to make that block, but whoever made the call to go tempo on 3rd (either Nuss or coaching staff) mismanaged the situation. If it was Nuss, Sloan needs to be in his ear telling him to hold up because we didn't have the right personnel, or they misplaced their faith in Pimpton's ability to seal the edge. Ultimately the fault lies on the coaching, IMO.
Pimpton didn't see the field last year because he couldn't block and we heard in the offseason about him making strides in that department, but clearly he's still not there yet.

I hate that approach. Not just with LSU, but in general. First, you are snapping the ball 5 yards back to try to get one. It's counterintuitive. Second, rushing to the line doesn't give your linemen/TE a chance to fully identify who they are blocking. The DL, LBs, and sometimes DBs, are just crashing and trying to shoot gaps. There's no real defensive "play" called their.
The thought is that by rushing to the line you keep the defense from subbing in their short yardage group and catch them at a spot where they are not set. However, many times the offense screws itself because they aren't set and don't have time to fully identified their blocks.
