fwiw, I didn't like most of pelini's defensive scheme either.
same here, though we were spoiled from the previous years i think. pelini's defense got the job done most of the time and ranked high.
i wonder if fulmer had anything to do with the "3rd and chavis" perception. seems to me that if the head coach doesn't like how a coordinator is calling things he would make changes.
we have people claiming miles is holding crowton back. could the same happen for a defensive coach?

wouldn't put it past miles.
he goes into "safe" mode too much IMO.
remember the well disguised saban blitzes on third down?
Posted on 9/9/09 at 2:27 pm to TheDoc
I'm going to call him John Cheevus until our defense holds the other team to less than 50% on third down conversions.
Why "Cheevus" you ask?
I don't know but it just sounds good to me.

i really do miss those.
i might be wrong in thinking this but i would be ok with playing off the reciever if the dback would drop back to about the 1st down line. seemed a number of times the corner was 5 yards beyond the 1st down line. i just did not understand that.
Posted on 9/9/09 at 2:38 pm to noonan
I miss it too, but don't say that too loudly.
fear da chavis!
I think the biggest problem with playing the soft zone was the distance the DB's were from the receivers.
couple that with locker throwing three step drop passes against that cusion, and there is where a lot of the 478 yards come from.

basically what i am/was thinking. just don't drop back so much that you give them the first down. step on that line and keep them underneath. to me that should work. but i don't coach football and never played competitively.

at least its a breather from JL vs JJ threads
*holds breath*
na but i think weel be ok this year. alot of people (including myself) bought into the coachspeak saying the defense was ready. while it wasnt in shambles, i wouldnt consider it where it needed to be. that being said its going to get better.
the 'third and chavis' thing does worry me, as it seems to have been his weakness in the past. at the same time even with this stigma, he has put together some fantastic defenses, so i think we should be ok. the point is still not moot, and it needs to be addressed. i do not like the amount of 3rd downs washington converted and we definitely cant keep up that statistic this season and compile an "acceptable" record.
hoping for the best

I had a UT friend of mine tell me exactly that. As a case in point, he said that Fulmer never liked the guy who's starting at MLB this year. Last year, Fulmer said he, "plays too hard in practice" and would not allow him to start.
Anyway, Monte appears to love the guy, his hard work and attitude and so this year he's starting. I don't know, it sounds a little far fetched to me but this is what the guy told me. FWIW, he believes it.

Am I the only person who is giving due credit to Locker for making some really nice plays on third down? Dude is a good QB and put some of thos balls on the money. He is likely to be an NFL QB and that was his first game back after sitting out last year there was no doubt that dude was busting arse. Locker is prob the third best qb we will see this year.
ETA; on several of these plays, the defender was not completely out of position like last year it was just nice throws.

No, you're not the only one, Spoon. Locker is a very good QB and that fact will emerge over the course of the season. I'm not saying our defense didn't make mistakes, because it certainly did. But UW and particularly Locker and Polk made some real good plays.

it does work. we know because we've seen it work.
you can't give a good throwing QB a 10-15 yard cushion and be surprised when he throws it to that receiver

Fulmer said he "plays too hard in practice; and would not allow him to start"..
First on all the guy is Nick Reveiz..Remember Fuad Reviez who kicked for UT and the Minnesota Vikings..It is his son..he has another son on the team as well..The kid was State Champ in wrestling but is something like 5-10...And Ellix Wilson was the starting Middle LB last year..Cedric Wilson' little brother..
The "thing about playing too hard in practice" was this kid was a WALK ON and would go FULL SPEED all the time..and on Tuesday's when the starters would be banged up and sore from Saturday's game..Reviez would be going full blast and caused a bunch of fights..Fulmer apparently yelled at him all of the time to "SLOW DOWN"..and this year Kiffin doesn't care how fast or how hard he goes in practice..Matter of fact, if they don't go hard..they don't play.
We are THIN at the LB spot..The kid is a WALK ON..Plays with a lot of heart, but is only 5-10 and isn't the fastest guy in the world..has to rely on "SMARTS" to get the job done..That is why he didn't play last year.
Man, the way some of these stories get stretched around..

Sorry if I offended. I'm just passing along what a UT fan told me.

If his defenses are so soft then how was "3rd and Chavis's" defense last year 3rd in the country in total defense, even when UT HAD no offense and the D was on the field ALL of the time!
Because they played some of the worst offenses in the nation last year. Juggernauts like Northern Illinois, Wyoming, Auburn, and UCLA.
Plus, whenever we did play anyone of merit, we would turn it over on our side of the field.
Excellent starting field position for your opponents + a schedule full of equally inept offenses as Tennessee = 3rd ranked defense

So you only pop in to post anti-Chavis comments?

No problem..Just show how far Fulmer had let our recruiting slide when you have a walk-on starting at MLB.
