Why would any quality veteran come just to backup Nuss? At best we get a sophomore who got beat out, and if he beats out Nuss in the spring, Nuss is transferring.

Face it, Nussmeier isn't the guy. We need a quarterback that can scramble and run if need be, example JD. Nussmeier has a career rushing total of -3.4, Kelly needs to get someone in the portal now, if he waits until after the bowl game it's too late.

Sorry I should probably know this but there was a time when you could put your name in the portal to see who has interest / makes you a better NIL offer but if nothing materializes you take your name back out of portal. Ie do coaches have to honor the scholly or is it revoked the minute you enter portal?

More than likely Nuss would probably still start, but depending on how talented the transfer QB is, Nuss would probably be on a short leash.

A QB that can run is great (assuming he can also throw). That being said, Michael Penix can't run and Washington has done just fine. Carson Beck isn't a runner at Georgia. I think Michigan is happy with JJ McCarthy. All of those are in the running to be 1st round draft picks as well. Don't be blinded by the most recent shiny object. JD was great, but there's more than one way for a QB to win.

Most Baton Rouge Reporters are going to toe the LSU Athletic Staff's party line, or they will be outside the info loop.
If the coaches are trying to get another QB then its apparent Collins isn't ready.
If Nuss isn't ready then Kelly has been lying to us since last season. He has repeatedly said, "We have two starting QBs".

If a player enters the portal, the current school can pull their scholarship for the next academic term. So players in the portal now can have scholarships pulled for the spring. Players who enter during the spring window can have their scholarships pulled for summer.
Coaches/schools don’t have to pull scholarships from players in the portal. They can let the player stay on scholarship if it’s someone they are trying to recruit back into the program. However, the total number of active scholarships can never exceed 85. So you can’t really backfill that player’s spot until you cut bait.
