LSU Fighting Tigers returns to face in state foe the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, out of Ruston, LA.

7:00 PM Friday November 16th, 2018, Pete Maravich Assembly Center SECN+

About the Matchup: Both the Tigers and the Bulldogs come into this matchup undefeated and with identical 3-0 records. There a lot of similarities and differences between these two teams which certainly makes it a much more interesting matchup than in years past. Both teams have already had impressive resume’ building non-conference wins, LSU beat Memphis 85-76, while Tech beat one of the nation’s premier “programs” in Wichita State in Wichita,KS 71-58. Both are led by young up and coming head coaches that are very disciplined and detail oriented guys. The last key similarity are for both programs a win in this game will definitely help in determining seeding in any postseason play. The differences really come down to style of play. Tech is in their 4th year under head coach Eric Konkol who has done a really good job reloading the program to when it was under Mike White. They play at a much slower pace than LSU does offensively, and there will probably be no pressing from Tech unless they are down big or down late. LSU looks to score and score with efficiency, and in doing so it’s defense feeds off of that with turnovers and steals. Tech on the other hand is the opposite, they like to play sound fundamental conservative defense to set up an offense that is both efficient, but deliberate and at a pace that helps there defense. Tech is the more experienced of the two, but that gives LSU a little bit of an advantage as it is harder to scout LSU right now because of that. No matter how the game shapes up these are two good head coaches that know each other, as Wade was an assistant at VCU while Konkol was an assistant at George Mason. Both are solid teams, that know what they want to do and the game should be very enjoyable to watch.

Stats:
LSU
Waters (SO) 12.7 PPG, 6.7 APG, 4.7 SPG
Mays (JR) 13.0 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 2.0 APG
Smart (FR) 12.0 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 2.0 APG
E. Williams (FR) 10.0 PPG, 8.3 RPG
Reid (FR) 19.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 1.0 BPG

Bench
Bigby-Williams (SR) 7.7 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 2.0 BPG
Taylor (JR) 6.7 PPG, 1.7 RPG
Days (FR) 9.0 PPG, 4.3 RPG
Edwards (SR) 1.3 PPG, 2.0 RPG, 1.0 APG

La Tech
Archibald 12.7 PPG, 6.3 RPG,
Duruji 10.3 PPG, 4.3 PPG
Christon 10.0 PPG, 3.7 RPG
Powell 8.3 PPG, 5.3 RPG
Jean 5.0, 3.7 RPG, 4.2 APG

Bench
Muhammad 11.0 PPG, 7.3 RPG
Pemberton 8.3 PPG, 5.0 RPG
Langston 5.7 PPG, 2.3 APG
Thomas 1.7 PPG, 1.0 RPG

If DaQuan Bracey can play, he is the best player on their team when healthy, and is a former C-USA Freshman of the Year, as well as their most explosive scorer and is a 15 PPG and 5-6 APG type of player. He has not played their last 2 official games but he is a big part of their team.

What the Stats Tell Us: LSU is the more athletic of the two teams as well as the better rebounding and shot-blocking of the two. But what Tech does as well as anyone in mid-major basketball is having their guards rebound down and bringing a team first approach to rebounding. LSU has been the best free throw shooting team in the SEC already at a scorching 82%, while Tech sits at only 66%. LSU has had 8 of their 9 guy in its rotation already reach double figures. Tech really only plays 8 guys when Bracey is sidelined. LSU has shot 33% from 3 thus far, and they have been a team of runs when it comes to shooting from behind the arch, they will make 4-5 in a row as a team then have cold spells. Tech only shoots 27% from behind the arch, however they have played on the road, and against teams that have played at slower paces than LSU has.

Keys to the Game:
Pace of Play: No question LSU likes to play at a faster pace but a controlled brisk pace. Tech likes to slow it down and run a multitude of sets on offense.
Rebounding from Guards/Wings: Tech is not an overly big or athletic team but their guards and their entire team do a great job of closing out and boxing out. LSU’s guards are more athletic and when they rebound down it helps the pace because they can just take off and go. It is imperative for Tech’s guards to help their bigs in this department.
Inbounding: LSU does a great job with sideline out of bounds and underneath the basket quick hitters. Tech does an even better job, and its where Tech can add 6-8 points which could make up for the lack of fatsbreak chaces if they can do a good a better job than LSU at it.
Perimeter defense: For Tech to have a chance they will need to stay out in front of LSU guards and not allow them to attack the lane and kick, no easy task against one of the best in the country in Tremont Waters. If LSU can attack the lane, Tech is in a no win situation as they really have no shot-blocking to speak of, and fouling is not an option with their depth. LSU also will look to improve their communication on the perimeter with both bigs and guards, if they can do that they can get steals and force turnovers which allows them to run even faster.

Prediction
If Bracey cannot play, I like LSU a lot more. As an LSU homer I can say LSU really does not have any weaknesses and can beat a team in a lot of ways. Tech presents a new challenge for LSU as opposed to their previous 3 opponents. The pace Tech will play at their team defensive approach is unique and frankly a dying art in college basketball. There are no NBA talented players on Tech, but LSU will get their best shot as they would any other in-state foe. In each game and I will do one for each of the first 9, I have predicted a player from LSU that has their season breakout game thus far in the season, this one I actually think relative to what he has done all year is Darryl Edwards. Darryl is a team leader, a plus defender and a plus shooter from 3. Against an experienced Tech team I think he makes a couple from 3 and he is a steady free throw shooter and a guy that will not get lolled to sleep by Tech’s offensive guard action as opposed to our younger guys who take more chances and are more aggressive. Kavell Bigby Williams played his best game of the season against Memphis after some difference of opinions against UNCG with Coach Wade, which Wade never loses those battles, but he came back and played a heck of game, as senior this is a game where it may not show up in the score sheet, but his length, size and shot-blocking presence especially in our half court zone will affect Tech on offense greatly. Tech will be a solid 20+ win team and will be there right at the end competing for a C-USA regular season title. But LSU is too much and too athletic in this one.

LSU 42 Tech 27 Half
LSU 83 Tech 64 Final

Also it has not come out yet, but it should be the canned food game where tickets will be $1 if you bring in stuff for Thanksgiving. Also this is the last home game for a while for LSU as they head to Orlando for the Advocare Invitational after this game.

Will Be going to this tone so please do not make this the game thread.

Waters is averaging 4.7 steals per game?! That’s a crazy stat.

With LaTech not likely to bring a press, is this a game that we will look to run or will it be one where we try to develop our half court offense?

Would love for this game to have over 10,000 paid attendance, but with the LHSAA football playoffs and other stuff going on in BR this Friday. 9000+ would be a good paid attendance number.

Should be fun. Our players have been a bit cold shooting threes. Overall, but at the same time Jean, Duruji, Archibald, and even Bracey are capable of getting hot and making those shots. Bracey just tends to drive more, Jean is an asset on defensive pressure and the team plays with better composure on defense with him on the court. I think Duruji can jump higher than anyone Ive ever seen in person.

Going to be a solid game....two likely tourney teams.

LSU is better and at home, but Tech can hang in there if they don't get outside of their game to much.

83-78 Tigers .

bravo for coach Wade the OOC scheduling has been lights out!

We will always look to run, but there definitely I think will be an added emphasis in running more sets that are not just run out of ball screens. I do not disagree with Wade's thinking on doing that, its the easiest thing to teach and all of the freshman and Taylor are used to heavy doses of ball screens from AAU/JUCO. Against Memphis Javonte Smart also was the primary ball handler a lot more than he had been the previous two games, I think more half court sets with Smart, Edwards, and Taylor this game would be nice.

If Bracey cant go I think we really beat the tar out of LA Tech, something like 91-59

I agree Bracey is key for Tech having a real shot at winning or keeping themselves within striking distance. But I think Tech plays solid enough defense and at a pace where it will be hard for LSU to push 90. However if Tech gets in foul trouble early and as well as LSU shoots one of our two freshman super-bigs could be in for a huge night.

Love the way our bigs run the floor out in transition.

Waters just takes balls (his steals). He literally goes and just takes it; a lot of them aren’t deflections or anything.
