Who all does the Rant believe will get starting jobs?
With the 4-3 coming back, I’m scratching my head at work this morning trying to predict what this is going to look like.
I’ve read on here how Shelvin and Ika won’t be on the field together except goal line, Marcel Brooks moved to MLB, but then we got Jabril Cox, so I wonder if that stays true. Was Brooks going to start at MLB over D. Clark anyway?? How about seniors Anthony, Thornton and junior Baskerville - are they career backups? I’ve also read here that TK McClendon is the real deal at DE, but I’m honestly not sure if that’s trolling. He might be good, I don’t know.
Are there any incoming Freshmen who are likely to start? (Webb, Sampah, Ojulari)
From what I can predict based off the roster:
DE - Neil Farrell Jr 6’4 298 SR
DE - Justin Thomas 6’5 256 JR (based off experience; good news is there are options)
DT - Tyler Shelvin 6’3 346 JR
DT - Glen Logan 6’4 295 SR
OLB - Jabril Cox 6’3 233 SR
OLB - Marcel Brooks 6’2 194 SO (if he goes back to DB, then you’re choosing from about 5 different players at this position)
MLB - Damone Clark 6’3 239 JR
CB - Derek Stingley Jr 6’1 190 SO
CB - Cordale Flott 6’2 160 SO (he good tho)
NICKEL - Kary Vincent 5’10 185 SR
FS - Todd Harris 5’11 190 JR (depending on what position Brooks is playing)
SS - JaCoby Stevens 6’1 228 SR
This will definitely be another fun year!

Flott, probably doesn't weigh that now.

I'm expecting Ward to push Flott for that CB spot.
Maurice Hampton at FS.

With all the hype O is giving TK Mclendon I’d put him in the starting lineup over Thomas.

I'd replace Thomas with TK McClendon based on how the coaches have talked him up and them saying Thomas has a lot of weight to lose

I think Farrell will sub with Logan inside.
TK McClendon and Gaye prolly on SDE.

Think they said they would use him outside and he's losing weight (280-285ish goal). IMO you gotta get him on the field. Shelvin, Logan and Farrell are by far the best 3 DL we have in terms of talent/experience. Hard to imagine our starting ends being 2 guys who basically never played much in Thomas and McClendon.
IMO someone else just needs to step up behind Logan at DT, a guy like Jenkins, Roy, etc...we need serious help at DE spots and Farrell provides stability there.

Lost in all this is the awesome fact that we have McGlothern, Ricks, Toles, etc.

I’d really like to see Vincent at free safety. Speed, range, and ferocity.

Also, don't we have a transfer at Defensive end from Texas that will be eligible this year? Cannot specifically recall his name, maybe "Williams".

Yeah Michael Williams. I doubt he starts though.

I hope we see Devonte Lee gets some playing time.

I think you are right on TK Mclendon, but got the wrong guy. Farrell will be a 3 tech DT is my guess unless he loses a bunch of weight.

They are talking about increasing pass rush with the front 4. Thomas was the only DL in the game on the third down rush package and Coach O said he was the best Pass rusher.
if you are going to pass rush, you do not want three DT on the field. My gut tells me they want McLendon and one of the really fast guys on the field rushing the passer. What they start with at the beginning of the year will be interesting, but I suspect they want one of the highly rated WDE on the field by mid season.

Do we have any read on Jarell Cherry? I think he's a redshirt SO now and I remember thinking he had tons of potential on the edge.

Which comes with the scheme itself going from 2 gap to 1 gap now.

Thomas O said last needed to lose a ton of weight, was pushing 300, that's heavier than Farrell right now who they said they are moving to DE and has been getting in shape for that.
Farrell is one of our best penetrating players we have, he needs to be on the field as a starter out there at DE to provide some stability there as well as being one of our best few DL we have returning who played last year. Had 7 tackles for loss and 3 sacks, he can play. He's been looking great in his workouts he's been posting recently. Probably close to 280-285 at about 6'3.
Thomas missed a lot of last season, got out of shape, and has never been much of a producer, just have a hard time seeing him starting next season.
