Because he was injured and got behind a lot of NFL talent. He'll explode this year.
still a bit of a question mark in coverage, but I like the fact that he's said he has to just focus on getting the ball carrier on the ground and not laying a vicious hit. He realizes he has to stay healthy

Kevin Minter was a starter last year. Lamin Barrow & Minter himself have been playing significant minutes and snaps since the 2010 season. I distinctly remember Barrow playing a large role against UNC which was the opener in 2010, which was about a month away from THREE seasons ago.
So I don't know where you're coming up with the BS about a lack of experience amongst our LBers from.

Two returning 1st-team All-Americans & a 1st-team All-SEC Cornerback, but you're concerned about the DB's?
You're an idiot.

Anyone that questions our defense being better this year than last is probably doing so for the obvious reason, which is how can one of the best defenses they've ever seen actually get better?
It's a legit question.
IF this defense is better, I'm going to say it'll ultimately be attributable to end play. IMHO, having awesome DE's is better than having awesome DT's, as awesome ends wind up being/shoring up linebacking. Additionally, are DE's run so well that backs out of the backfield/shorter pass routes can actually be snuffed out/challenged by uising them on occasion. Only works if they can run like deer though, which ours can.

Idk, maybe so. I'm just not sold on loston. He has trouble with the plays and coop wasn't that high on him either. I hope he can contribute though.

Mingo and Montgomery are the best DE combo in the country and the secondary also has the potential to be as great as last year, maybe even better because Reid is capable of All American honors and Simon All SEC honors, nothing needs to be said for Honey Badger, but Loston is the x factor!
your concerns for LB are understandable, but Minter is solid and they have 3 young studs with speed to burn so I'm feeling OK about them!

I kinda agree. We have more horses at Defensive End than we did last year. Ken Adams was steady but unspectacular. This year-and don't be surprised-if Rasco goes hog-arse-wild on the opposite side of Sonic Sam, & Mingo gets some extra looks as well.
But our Secondary's going to be fantastic. Simon's going to do just fine on his side of the field and we'll be fine in the slot where most teams traditionally put weaker players. Our slot corner is a Heisman Finalist. On the other side we'll have a greenhorn but we'll have Poppa Reid over the top flying all over, with Loston ready to decapitate as well.
Don't sleep on Ronnie Martin either, fellas.

I would have way more concerns if I were on arky, a&m and possibly bama and usce side of the field playing LSU.
Let's settle down. The Chief is too hyped up about this secondary for us to be concerned about these things.

I know just about everyone on here thinks our defense this year will be better than last years. I am concerned about the inexperience in the LB corp and the DB's. Our dime package will have to contain some raw and inexperienced guys. I like that our schedule allows us to get some experience before the SEC wars but my opinion is that we are going to have to score a lot to overcome our weaknesses. 10-2 would not surprise me. I hope i'm wrong but whatever it is we will have a very good and exciting team. Let the games begin.
All I need to hear is how much Chavis likes this D......enough for me

Without reading the entire thread I'll just say this.
I think the D from last year did exceptional considering how much they had to be on the friggin field.
This year our offense will, hopefully, be on the field much more.

Those are the TOP breakdowns from last season. We were ahead in every single game until Bama and the difference was 12 seconds. Only other games were WKU, UGA and BAMA(2)...which we lost the ladder.
If we improve upon those numbers by much we are going to win every game by 40 points.

I would hope for some of those gimme games, it'd be a lot more lopsided.
It's hard to judge because you have 3 and outs mixed in with quick scores.
I just think we'll manage the ball a lot better against the better SEC teams, not depend on forced turnovers and ST.
Our D had to tote the load last season.

I remember 2 personal foul calls in that game and him rarely seeing the field since then.

The only thing I am worried about is the tigers staying healthy. If they do BCSNC.
And I don't need any stinking cool aid.

I agree w / P&G.
One way to help the defense is for the offense to keep the ball and score. We sure had lots of three and outs last year...
We went 13-1 with a running team and still was only 21st in TOP.
With an SEC quality QB we can increase TOP and help the defense more than last yr.
