You must not have been around for the 1989 season. They were almost identical.

I remember him saying when he was coaching at Illinois, "my defense takes 10 years to learn". Lou was one of the worst coordinators lsu ever had. Lyn Amadee was up there too

Could LSU have beaten Tulane in 1998?

I wanna say at Tiger Stadium:

LSU 39
Tulane 36

In the Superdome:
LSU 31
Tulane 37

In the Liberty Bowl:

LSU 33
Tulane 36

We would have pistol whipped Tulane in 98. They played NOBODY to go 12-0.

It wasn't their fault they played bad teams. I still think they would have beaten LSU and ended our win streak against them that year. If we would have finished 6-5 we would have found out in the Liberty Bowl. They beat the teams that were in front of them, while we lost five games by seven points or less.

Yes it was. I think we would have beat 12-0 Tulane if the game was played in Tiger Stadium. On a neutral site? I'm not as confident.

I vividly remember being in the pool/game room at university commons one night the week after the Idaho game and ESPN had a graphic of "still alive for the national championship" or something and we were like #3 on that list. Didn't turn out as we had hoped.

1998, was in many ways a carbon copy of 1989. The two teams each finished 4-7 with 2 conference wins, after high preseason expectations. In each case, the head coach was fired the next year. And each team featured a senior quarterback who had much success in their prior three seasons.

That was unbelievable, and the fact the game was one sided made it moreso. State was the SEC West champion that year.
