There haven't been many memorable games in this series, but this one sure was... or at least the ending. Gerry DiNardo made his first and only return to his former employer's home stadium and the Dores were ready for a little payback... LSU on the other hand was in a classic trap game situation
with #1 Florida on deck, Cecil "the Diesel" Collins had been lost for the season.

The result was a very ugly game that LSU led 7-0 until the anemic Vanderbilt offense finally got on the board with a TD pass with 16 seconds left. Commendably, Vandy coach and Super Mario stunt double Woody Widenhofer (yes that's his real name) decided to go for two and the win. What happened next was Les Miles-level insanity:
1 Vanderbilt got a delay of game penalty after LSU called timeout before their attempt (this may have been intentional on Vandy's part, to give their QB more room to throw).

2 Vanderbilt got another delay of game (this time they had lined up and there was no gamesmanship)

3 Vanderbilt finally attempted to kick the extra point and it was blocked by LSU's Arnold Miller.

It was a win that didn't feel good, but in their next game LSU would do the unthinkable and upset #1 Florida, ending the Gators' long SEC winning streak.

Few corrections, but great stuff.. Cecil broke his leg no acl, it was a blocked Xp not FG and the line for FL was 10, it was an upset but not a massive one

I was there. Jimmy Williams from episcopal played for Vandy. He got the shite knocked out of him then proceeded to vomit on the field right in front of where we were sitting.

And the Wayne Williams fumble return to save an 0-3 start. Don’t know who 17 is for Vandy but he’s fast as shite.

Watching old games now, you constantly expect horsecollar, targeting, etc. flags. There would be like 15 ejections per game by today's rules

I was there, insane ending for sure. Collins broke his leg early on, but we still had Faulk.

This was the bus trip game for students. I forget exactly how cheap but it was absurdly inexpensive.

Some girl from the bus trip got so blitzed at the game that I had to carry her to get help. They actually flew her back with the team because she was so ill.

ETA- the rest of us rode home gloomy because we were expecting an arse whipping from Florida the next week. That worked out okay.

This was like the first student bus trip since Huey Long sent a train of students to Vandy. I was part of this one and was shocked we almost lost.

It was like $15 or $25 for a trip, ticket, shirt and meal.

I was there. LSU fans jammed up in corner with rest of stadium empty. Hot as hell facing sun.

Cecil actually played in this game, and suffered the season ending injury in it. If my memory is right, he caught a swing pass out of the backfield when his foot got caught in a seam in the turf, then tore his knee up.
