Why did a top ten 1 loss tiger team not make a bowl game in 1969. However, the year before and after they lost 3 games and still played in a bowl game?

Not many bowl games back then, and it was all up to the sports writers.

It's all Notre Dame's fault. They had a self imposed bowl ban before then they decide to go to a bowl. I think it was the Orange Bowl took them, all of the other good bowls were filled and LSU chose to stay home rather than go to a crappy bowl.

Think that was the year Notre Dame decided they would start playing in bowl games. They announced the change in policy very late, and the Tigers got burnt.

Its the reason I still hate the Mannings.

We lost to an Archie Manning Ole Piss team like 26-23 or something like that.

Our defense lead the nation in rushing defense allowing 39 yards per game

Think that was the team that got passed over for a New Years Day bowl in favor of effing Notre Dame.

Yes Notre Dame voted to end its bowl hiatus and they went to the Cotton Bowl instead of LSU.

this is all correct. lsu got an invite to the tangerine bowl and the players voted to decline. i was a student and everyone i know as well as the local alum supported their decision. we got hosed. i don't blame notre dame tho, the other damn major bowls hosed us. it was not unusual for southern teams to get shat on in those days fwiw.

It was Notre Dame's decision to return to the bowls and accepting a Cotton Bowl invitation that caused Coach Mac's best team to sit home on New Year's Day. LSU had a tremendous rushing defense and many thought a match up between LSU and top ranked Texas which emphasized the run (and the then newfangled wishbone offense). The Sugar Bowl wanted LSU, but LSU believed it was in line for the Cotton Bowl. The Fighting Irish changed their longstanding policy against bowl games and got the Cotton invitaton that LSU coveted. The Sugar Bowl had in the meantime moved on to Ole Miss. The Peach Bowl asked LSU to return, but the Tigers felt they belonged in one of the New Year's games and elected to stay home.

Yes I was a H.S. Senior and followed that year closely. I saw the Ole Miss game, we lost a close one against Archie Manning. I drove to
Jackson,Ms to see Ole Miss win a close game. There were double headers then. LSU/OM in the day and MsState/Alabama night. They rotated LSU and BAMA against the two Ms. schools each year. It was great. Since we lost to OM, we didn't go to the Cotton Bowl, Notre Dame went in a surprise. Sugar Bowl took Ole Miss since we lost to them. I couldn't remember if it was the Tangerine Bowl or the Independence Bowl, maybe both, that we turned down. Times were different then. Bowls invited the teams to play, no committee or poll was involved. Team pride caused us to vote against going to a lesser bowl.

That is the reason so many LSU fans hate Notre Dame with a passion! Even Catholics!

You have opened an old wound. This was Mac's finest team that could have won the national championship. There was a gentlemen's agreement that LSU would play Texas for the national championship in the Cotton Bowl. Texas ran the wishbone in 69 and should have been defeated by Arkansas in the famous showdown that Nixon attended. Nobody could run on LSU , and they would have beaten Texas. Texas jumped at the chance to play Notre Dame to avoid LSU. Remember, Ole Miss kicked the crap out of Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl; the game was not as close as the final score would indicate. LSU was the best team in the country that year.

LSU was supposed to be matched with Texas in the Cotton Bowl. However, Notre Dame ended its self-imposed post season bowl ban and decided it wanted to play in the Cotton Bowl. LSU was 9-1 ... with a loss to Archie Manning and Ole Miss. LSU could have tied the game, but Coach Mac went for the win instead. ND finished 8-1-1 ... loss to Purdue and tie with USC.

As the Cotton Bowl opportunity abruptly ended, LSU lobbied for the Sugar Bowl. However, the Sugar Bowl selected Ole Miss over LSU. Yes, Manning had beaten LSU, but Ole Miss had 3 losses that '69 season.

Needless to say, bad feelings between LSU and the Sugar and Cotton Bowls lingered for many years. LSU did not return to the Sugar Bowl until 1985 ... even later to the Cotton Bowl (2003).

I have heard that LSU could have gone to the Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston Astrodome against the U. of Houston. LSU voted no ... and Auburn ... a team LSU beat 21-20 in an-all time homecoming classic ... went instead. Auburn was soundly beaten by UH and the veer offense.

The 1969 team was the best of the McClendon era.

Wow! That is some sick info. Ya, now I really don't like the media or Notre dame. Notre dame must of been like the USC of today. A popular team but not the best.
