What did Alabama do to fall behind those two ?

Alabama was #1 in the preseason poll, but as soon as the first weekly poll came out they were dropped to #3. ND suffered similarly. In preseason they were #6, and they dropped to #8 week 1. Neither team had played a game. Michigan State had played a game and was elevated to #1.

As far as schedules go, ND played four teams ranked in the top 10 when they played them (Purdue #7 when played, #7 final; Ok #10 and UR; Mich State #2 and #2; USC #10 and UR). Bama played no top 10 teams during the reg season. Ole Miss and TN were probably solid top 25 teams though (AP only did a top 10 back then). MSU played two teams in the top 10 (Purdue #9 and #7; ND #1 and #1)

A couple of other points:

o the final AP was before the bowl games.

o only Bama played in a Bowl game. ND didn't play in bowl games at that time and there was a rule that you could not have repeat appearances in the Rose Bowl. MSU went in 65 and the Big Ten only did the Rose, so MSU did not go to a bowl game.

Based on Wiki Alabama was preseason Number 1 never lost nor tied but got jumped by both ND and Mich St. and finished the season 3rd.

ESPN hated Alabama back then. Now they hate LSU.

Then how did Alabama win the AP title in 1964 and 1965 and Spurrier win the Heisman in 1966 ?

BUT the only team that was close in 1964 was ARK and in 1965 was UCLA!!! In 1966 MSU and ND were better teamsaccording to the BIASED writers. However Bear said the 1966 team was his best!! I think they would have beaten BOTH scholls in 1966.

Notre Dame played a really soft schedule in those days.....

While not the most difficult schedule ever played, they did in fact play two teams that ended up ranked in the "top-10": #6 Purdue and #2 Mich. St. as well as #18 USC. They also beat an 8-2 Army team as well as a 6-4 Oklahoma team in Norman. Note: Their 51-0 pounding of USC was the most one-sided win in the long history of the series.

However, only two of Notre Dame's opponents played in bowls--Purdue and Southern Cal,who met each other in the 1967 Rose Bowl

This was pretty much the norm back then as there were far fewer bowls and only the conference champions were invited (in most cases) and even then that wasn't always the case, as you point out with Mich. St. It would be unusual during that decade for any team to play more than a couple of bowl teams during any single season.

yea,but that wasn't one of those Army teams from the 40's and 50's. Their other loss was a pounding to Tennessee, who lost to Alabama. Army played Colgate,George Washington,Holy Cross and Rutgers,to name a few.

Oklahoma went 2-3 after that loss to Notre Dame.

The writers were not biased against Alabama. Michigan State won the coaches award and writers votes Alabama no. 1 in 1965. How is that biased?
