I think Len Dawson was playing for the Dallas Texans in 1961
He was actually Milt Plum's backup on the Browns that year.
I wonder if Paul Brown thought twice about that one later on.

Another thing about Unitas, if Shula would have put him in 10 minutes earlier in Super Bowl III( he had been injured earlier in the year and Earl Morrall did an awesome job getting the Colts to the game,) a hELLuva lot less people would know who Joe Namath is
I'm too young to have seen the game, so I'm not arguing with you, but I remember Steve Sabol once admitting he was a bitter Colts fan and edited the Super Bowl III highlight reel to make it look like Unitas could engineer a dramatic comeback.
He said the reality was that the Colts got dominated and didn't score until garbage time.

He did, got them right back into it, just a little too little too late.

Okay, I was only 11 years old, but I remember the game distinctly.
Unitas was still hurt and half-hobbling. His passes were like wounded ducks. He gave a gallant effort.
He did lead them to the one touchdown to make it 16-7, but I never had the sense he was remotely capable of leading the Colts to a comeback win against the Jets.

There ain’t no garbage time in a Super Bowl(although it wasn’t called that yet,)
Colts we’re mentally beaten, Unitas came in and marched them right down for a score, had another good drive going iirc(been a long time,) Shula just waited too long to make the switch.
ETA: Unitas was still hurting physically but almost came back on sheer will and mental toughness, and football IQ, if you will

That game was a mixture of the Colts shooting themselves in the foot with bazookas basically the entire time, Joe Namath calling a masterful game, and the defense capitalizing on Baltimore's screwups and gaining TOs. Hell, if Jim Turner doesn't miss two FGs it might've been 22-0 or something to that effect. The outcome of the game made complete sense when all's considered.

Bobby Layne was great. A million people in the Detroit area claimed to have had a drink with him, and none of them were lying
