Ok. Maybe. Just maybe. Blake Baker is better than I’ve given him credit for.

Next week against Russell and Bama will be another big test of Baker D.

I like what happened today. But I need more evidence.

People get mad because of the bad scheme on the 2 min drives and that’s understandable. We also give up some plays, especially on 3rd downs, but some of that is on the players, not Baker and the staff.
Part of it is that we don’t often dominate wire to wire defensively in these wins and we aren’t getting many turnovers. We just play solid defense and at the end of the game, most of the teams we play are ending up with season lows in yards and scoring well below average. Other than the sacks, we don’t do a lot that jumps off the screen, but we do control games vs teams that aren’t as good as we are.
That was all the case again today. It doesn’t always look how fans want and like what we remember great defense looking like. But it works.

I have been surprised by how many people have judged him under Kelly so harshly. He was coaching a unit that had no offensive running game to help it out at all and was borderline mutinying against Kelly. Once Kelly was fired, they looked really good on the road against Bama and OU.
He is by no means perfect, but they continue to improve and have been elite the last two weeks.

So far, Kentucky is the only team that has had more yards in the game against LSU than their season average.
This game vs. Auburn's season average coming into the game
Total Defense
271 yards vs. 394.2 YPG
Passing Defense
204 yards vs. 212.2 YPG
Rushing Defense
67 yards vs. 182 YPG
3rd Down Conv. Defense
31.3% vs. 45.1% YPG
Scoring Defense
17 Points vs. 26.8 Points

Anyone else notice our blitzes at the end of the game against even the second string QB? Normally Baker sits in a soft zone, I bet Lane talked to him

That 24 defense had some serious talent deficiencies, especially at Safety and LB other than Weeks. Penn made Keys look like a track sprinter. It was impressive to me that he got them to be average.
Last year has fewer excuses. The talent level was better, but not having Weeks at full strength at all during the season was a problem and the DL was pretty cobbled together. This is really the first defense where he’s really had good to top-level SEC talent across all 3 levels when healthy. And the stats and rankings have increased this season in proportion with the talent.
This defense does need to prove it against better teams down the stretch, especially Bama at home. But we are handling lesser tasks in a way we couldn’t over the previous two seasons. We are also better at keeping athletic QBs in check.

At least you admit you over reacted and melting down about nothing

Jk man it’s good to be able to take in new information and admit being wrong or overreacting or jumping to conclusions. You’re like an actual functional adult.
Which means GTFOOH

We have as much talent as anyone in the country on that side of the ball, and I’m not exaggerating. We also dominate statistically… and yet, we have choked in clutch situations on either:
1. Goofy arse alignments
2. Goofy arse situational playcalling
3. Overpursuit somehow leaves a 15+ yard radius in the middle of the field completely devoid of LSU players
That’s a glaring indictment of playcalling and situational coaching in-game.
He is good at literally everything else (recruiting / evaluating, development, depth chart, base scheme & gameplanning)… but for god’s sake just play your defense.
This is fixable, but I figured this would be the year it got fixed. Bama’s QB is exactly the type who could make that a frustrating game for us.
