I see alot of folks on here stuck on a players star ranking on 247 and often wonder why. Some of our best recruits the last few years have been severely underrated, I think the coaches may be on to something.

3 recent examples:

Thaddeus Moss - 3 star #401 national #15 TE
Clyde Edwards-Helaire - 3 star #378 Nat #5 APB
Justin Jefferson - 3 star Unranked Nat! #310 WR

Point being, I trust the coaches and teammates to help these guys perform, even if they aren't a five star out of high school. These kids are young and have more in front of them than behind. So let's see what they can do before we pass judgement.

How many times does this need to be said. Yes there are 3 stars that turn out to be very good but the majority of them don’t amount to anything. It has been proven that the majority of 5 star players end up playing in the NFL. The Elite players are often evaluated very well and on point. You cant get them all right. There’s 1,500+ players being ranked

Because high 4 and 5* players are more successful than 2 and 3* players on average and it's not close. Sure there are some that are overrated and underrated but those are outliers.

I am not arguing that. Just saying that there is more to some of these kids than a star rating. They may be surrounded by a weak team in high school, or a small team that doesn't draw alot of scouts, or simply a late bloomer. Just like there are sometimes guys who are overrated. I understand the majority of times the scouts get it right, but also trust that if the kid gets an offer the coaches see something in him.

The vast majority of our recruiting class every year is 4 and 5 stars, so no I don't think they have any 3 star secret strategy. Someone could also list a much larger list of 3 stars we have signed that didn't do much.

Everything you just said are outliers. That’s not the norm. So to answer your question, people star gaze because for the most part especially in the Top 100 those players are very very good. The Top 30 are Elite and will be instant impact players. Much more so than your run of the mill 3 star

For the most part the college star system is based purely off measurables. Frankly it was only created for sites like Rivals, Scout and 247 to justify getting your $10/month.

Every kid who gets an SEC offer is bad arse on the field, so the kids who are more physically developed are considered the elite. If you stand in a group of a 100 SEC recruits you can most definitely pick the 5 stars without ever watching film or seeing them play live. Huge difference in bodies for an O.J. Howard(5 star) versus a DeSean Smith or Jacory Washington(4 stars)

Ever Here of Jamar Chase? 5*****
How about Leonard Fornette?
How about the #1 CB in america Derrick Stingley, who could leave if the NCAA Allowed and would be drafted in the first round AS A FRESHMAN

5^^^^^ are the ELITE of the ELITE....

It doesn't mean 2-3 stars can't become SUPERSTARS, it just means if you have a choice between a 5 star and a 3, you take the 5 Star....

SEE BAMA for a "How To" Guide when it comes to recruiting....
Bama has Najee, who is a FIRST ROUND PICK, and a MONSTER aka 5 star, (they didn't have to recruit Clyde)
whereas LSU had to "FIND" a Clyde, Bama had the GUARANTEED Player, where we got the maybe a player

It's just Percentages, and when you get more 4-5 stars, you get fewer 3 stars (just reality)

Half of the NFL is three star and below. Players develop at different rates. And it is impossible for these websites to really evaluate all high school players

Yes, there is cases where a 3 star will end up shining, but the odds are better for the 4 and 5 stars.

Half the NFL is 3 stars...
Where did you pull this information
I think it would be an interesting read....

BUT I would agree, on the basis there are 1000s of universities and only a handful of 5 star athletes

Every year someone comes to the RB with this thread. Which means in about 2.5 months, someone will start the thread about how only one 5 star recruit is in the super bowl.

Like clockwork.

These sites don't necessarily rate the players for the NFL. They are ranked vs the country at that specific time, and how they will be in college. We all know the story of the 2 and 3 star guy who becomes a stud, but 4 and 5 star players are usually very good college players.

The percentage of 5 stars that make the NFL BLOWS AWAY the percentage of any of your other stars. What are there, 10-15 5 stars per class, and HUNDREDS of 3 star players? I would imagine close to half or more of 5 stars have at least a cup of coffee in the NFL. What percentage of 3 stars do?
