They really aren't.

Do you know what Tom Brady was rated?

Drew Brees?

Two of the best QB's ever to play in the NFL. Look up their ratings by the recruiting services.

Even a weatherman in Louisiana would be fired if he was only as accurate as recruiting service player rankings. And I am always amazed how bad the weathermen are.

Interesting that you use these two as examples of how bad recruiting rankings are.

First off, I tried to "look up their ratings by the recruiting services" as you said. Turns out that neither Rivals.com nor 247sports.com existed yet when those players were high school recruits.

Second, Tom Brady was selected in the 6th round of the 2000 NFL draft. Quarterbacks selected ahead of Brady include:
- Chad Pennington
- Giovanni Carmazzi
- Chris Redman
- Tee Martin
- Marc Bulger
- Spergon Wynn

So to your statement:

Does that apply to NFL scouts as well?

What's more likely:
A. college coaches are THAT much better than both recruiting services and NFL scouts at evaluating quarterbacks, or
B. evaluating quarterbacks (and players in general) is an imperfect science where credit should be given based on aggregate success, not individual cases?

For instance Jeaux Burrow was a 3-star and rated lower than Arkansas' Heisman candidate QB by Rivals.

Nobody uses Rivals. Burrow was a consensus 4 star

There's a big margin of error in evaluating players, even the 5 star ones. So it's a bit silly to be overly hung up on an individual player's rating. Collectively it matters a lot because the smaller margin of errors will lead to more positive outcomes in total.

Josh Allen of Kentucky last year was a 2 star athlete coming out of high school, but was the 7th overall pick in last years draft. But I doubt there's a coach in the country that would have chosen him, and that includes Stoops, if they could have signed a high 4 or 5 star equivalent. Not doing so takes an awful lot of vision that people don't have.
