When will we make our first splash in the transfer portal?

We’ve been extremely quiet in the portal compared to a lot of other schools. I think there’s 3 possible reasons for that:

1.) We’re not interested in many of the prospects who are in the portal currently.

2.) We’re going after prospects, but our coaches are bad at recruiting and whiffing on all the prospects.

3.) We have some silent commits from the portal and Kelly is going to announce them all at once.

I’m going to be optimistic and go with option 3.

If Wingo and Smith are staying, I guess there’s no urgency to pursue DTs like Nolen or Overton.

Maybe they’re confident that we’ll retain the guys that we want.

Didn’t a bunch of the portal commits last year wait and announce after ESD?

More players are staying and we don’t have positions available because more HS recruits. Not many positions available

If we retain well, this could be our defense next year:

DE/ Jack - Womack, Swinson, Jones, Howard
DT - Wingo, Smith, Washington, Hill
LB - Perkins, Weeks, Penn
Safety - Gilbert, Sage, Burns, Jackson
Nickel - Toviano, Yates
Corner - Alexander, Johnson, Stamps

Offense should mostly be good next year with the addition of an alpha WR and maybe one depth OL piece.

That could be a solid depth chart IMO.

We either need Maason Smith to do a 180 and become a star next year or we need to find a star DT to take his place.

His performance this year was completely unacceptable and was one of the reasons for our terrible defense.

Maybe we could move Smith to OT or OG and get some use out of him there.

Is Denver Harris just gone we think?

Assuming I haven’t missed any news on him.

Scarborough seems to think they will wait to make announcements after staffing changes are done.

I don’t think anything is official with him, but I’d say there’s no chance he’s here for the spring. It’s a bummer because he has a ton of potential.

4 - We don't have scholarships available to go hog wild in the transfer portal like last year.

He played high, probably still gimpy from injury. Left him open to giving up way too much ground. Hopefully he fully heals and gets low this year. He needs to work on his hands and shedding blockers as well. Hope he can put it all together this year. Would benefit from a full time D line coach.

Hopefully Jenkins gave him some more tips on how to get low in his stance.
