UPDATED May 20, 2010--TigerDroppings 2011 Louisiana Top 35

Posted on 5/14/10 at 5:50 pm
With this update, I need to start a new blog post so that I can write updates for all the new prospects. Due to word count limits per post, the current stickied thread will not be able to fit evaluations for all 35 prospects and those on the Watch List.
Board, I will be working my way through the entire list, but it may take a little while before I have a write up for every player. Hopefully this is understandable.
As always--Let the discussion begin!

1 La'el Collins
Offensive tackle
Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Redemptorist High School
Ht:6'5"
Wt:285 lbs
40:5.5 secs
Committed to LSU--September 28, 2009.
La'el is truly an elite prospect. He has the perfect frame and exhibits impressive athleticism for a kid his size. Collins has everything you want in an Offensive Tackle prospect--Great size, excellent feet, long arms, strength, agility, and a "mean streak." La'el does need to improve his pass blocking, but otherwise, his game is everything you look for in a prospect. He also does a great job getting to the second level; expect to see him ranked in the top 10 nationally.

2 Anthony "The Freak" Johnson
Defensive tackle
New Orleans, Louisiana
O. Perry Walker
Ht:6'4"
Wt:298 lbs
40:5.27 secs
Bench Reps:28
Shuttle:4.3
Vertical:22 inches
Committed to LSU--December 18, 2009
The nickname "The Freak" explains why Johnson is ranked as the top defensive player in Louisiana for 2011. Maturing at a young age, Johnson has controlled his opponents at the point of attack. He has great quickness off the ball, blue chip strength, and excellent technique for someone his age. He is physically mature and ready to step in day 1 to contribute to any team in the country. Expect Johnson to be a top 15 player nationally.
3 Greg Robinson
Offensive tackle
Thibodaux, Louisiana
Thibodaux
Ht:6'6"
Wt:290 lbs
Bench Max:365
Squat Max:525
Recruitment: Holds LSU offer along with an offer from Arkansas, Auburn, SMU, and Tulsa. He has early interest (no offer yet) from Alabama, Cal, Florida, Nebraska, Oregon, Texas Tech, UCLA, and USC. Most consider him to be a strong LSU lean.
Robinson is a great looking offensive tackle prospect. He possesses a massive body for only a junior in high school. He plays guard for Thibodaux, but is flexible and athletic enough to play either guard or tackle at the next level. He is one of the better pulling high school guards I have watched. He displays great speed, strength, and flexibility as he pulls on running plays. Gregory has everything a major college offensive line prospect needs to have in order to be successful at the next level. He has been tremendous in combines and his stock is soaring. I am expecting Robinson to be ranked in the 40s nationally.

4 Jarvis Landry
Wide Receiver
Lutcher, Louisiana
Lutcher
Ht:5'11"
Wt:178 lbs
Committed to LSU--January 9, 2010
One word perfectly describes Landry: Physical. Whether he is making a huge block on offense, a devastating hit on special teams, or as a defender, Landry is never one to avoid contact. He gets off press coverage extremely well (a rarity for high school wide receivers), has great catching ability, and is able to make something happen after the catch. To say that Landry plays bigger than his size would be a vast understatement. He does not possess elite speed, but his other attributes easily make up for it. He really made a name for himself this past year at multiple camps. He came away as the top receiver at the camp, regardless of year, each time. He recently won the MVP at the LSU Camp as he continues his dominance on the camp circuit. Expect for Jarvis to be ranked in the top 50 nationally.

5 Jemauria Rasco
Strongside defensive end
Shreveport, Louisiana
Evangel Christian
Ht:6'3"
Wt:227 lb
Recruitment: Rasco is expected to choose between Texas and LSU.
Rasco is another elite defensive lineman out of Louisiana for 2011. He offers a quick burst off the edge, but maintains the ability to stop the run. Physically, he is ready to play as a freshman and will contribute to any team lucky enough to gain his services. He offers a mix of rushing ability, run stopping, and discipline that is a rarity at the high school ranks. Expect Rasco to be a top 35 national prospect. While I have him ranked below other prospects, the national services are very, very high on Rasco.
6 Kenny Hilliard
Running Back
Patterson, Louisiana
Patterson
Ht:6'0"
Wt:235 lbs
Committed to LSU--December 18, 2009
When LSU fans hear the name Hilliard, it quickly brings back memories of former great tiger, Dalton Hilliard. Kenny is Dalton's nephew and cousin of Ike Hilliard. He hopes to continue the great RB tradition at LSU with his early commitment to play for the Tigers. He is a bruiser of a tailback weighing in around 235 lbs as a junior in highschool. He runs with a similar style to another recent Tiger, Charles Scott, while also being a dangerous receiving threat out of the backfield. He makes clean cuts, displays great agility and punishes defenders while carrying the ball. A smaller version of Brandon Jacobs is another common comparison. He

18 Corey White
Offensive Line
Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Capitol
Ht:6'5"
Wt:280 lbs
Recruitment: Committed to LSU--December 18, 2009.
White is a big bodied lineman that plays Left Tackle at Capitol. He projects as an offensive guard at the next level. Corey shows potential but will need a few years to develop into an SEC caliber offensive lineman. He is slow at times getting out of his stance and needs to work on his pad level. He does show good effort moving his feet, but this area will need to approve more as well. Overall, White is a bit of a project player but he has the frame that you look for in a college prospect. He is only a junior and will continue to add size and develop over the next year. I expect White to be a high 3 star prospect.
On a very positive note, White has worked his tail off since football season ended and is down to 280 pounds. He is losing the baby fat that he had from this past year and is becoming a leaner, quicker player. If he can get back up to the 300 lb range with muscle added, then he will be a greatly improved player.

18 Quentin Thomas
Defensive tackle
Breaux Bridge, Louisiana
Breaux Bridge
Ht:6'3"
Wt:265 lbs
Recruitment: LSU Commitment.
Thomas is a very athletic looking defensive lineman off the cuff. He appears almost more in a defensive end's body mold right now, but his frame screams athleticism. He reminds me of Marquise Hill's frame, but only for a junior in high school. Thomas will need to continue to develop his technique, but he has all the physical tools to be a great college lineman. He shows above average speed and is quick off the snap. He is still able to "man handle" the undersized offensive lineman he faces at the high school level. He shows raw athleticism but needs a lot of technical work. I would expect him to be ranked as a 5.7 3 star.

19 Devonte Scott
Athlete
Ferriday, Louisiana
Ferriday
Ht:5'11"
Wt:175 lbs
Recruitment: Committed to Mississippi State--February 19, 2010
Scott is a dynamic player that can return kicks and punts and play WR at the next level. I think this is a great example of a very talented guy that will not get an LSU offer due to the depth of the 2011 class. He has good agility, balance, and vision.
20 Alonzo Lewis
Wide Receiver
St. James, Louisiana
St. James
Ht:6'3"
Wt:195 lbs
40:4.4 secs
Committed to LSU-- February 20, 2010
In all honesty, there is not much to go by with Lewis. There are only a couple clips of Lewis anywhere on the internet, but Lewis does have one major thing showing his level of skill: An early LSU offer. He has good size and speed, but plays in a very run oriented system. (For his 2009 season he had 16 catches for ~200 yards and 2 touchdowns; He was hurt for part of the year). Therefore, I will have to go a bit out on a limb with this ranking. He has an LSU offer (one of the first 2011 prospects to receive an offer) at a major position of need for the Tigers and he is one of "the" names always listed in the conversation of LA's 2011 talent. I would expect for Lewis to be ranked as a 4 star by the end of the year, but due to the lack of video, he will probably be ranked as a high 3 star.
One thing working against Lewis is a very poor showing at the Army All-American Junior combine.

21 Daren Kitchen
Cornerback
Houma, Louisiana
Vandebilt Catholic
Ht:6'1"
Wt:172 lbs
Recruitment: Holds offers from Nebraska and Stanford.
Kitchen offers two pretty big offers for this early in the process. LSU is not too involved in his recruitment yet as they have national targets at CB, but if those players commit elsewhere, look for the heat to turn onto Kitchen later in the process.
Daren offers a good height, but needs to add some weight to his frame. He is listed at 172, but I think he may be even lighter than that. He has a pretty short torso and long, thin legs, with pretty long arms. There is not much video available of him currently, but he has performed well recently in camps.

22 Renaldo Thomas
Safety
New Orleans, Louisiana
St. Augustine
Ht:6'3"
Wt:190 lbs
Recruitment: Holds LSU, Tennessee, Michigan, Tulsa, and SMU offers. Considered an LSU lean, although he may not have a committable offer at this point in the recruiting process as LSU evaluates several out of state safety prospects.
Thomas is a very athletic, lean bodied kid. He has excellent height and wonderful change of direction for a person his size. He needs to add a lot of weight to be able to play at the next level. As stated before, he is a lean, thin bodied kid that will need to add weight before he is ready for the college game.
Renaldo shows excellent lateral movement and good closing speed. He shows as much pure athleticism as any prospect in the state this year, but he needs to develop his body and learn the game better to become a contributor in college. I think he needs a minimum of two years of college weight training before he will be able to play at the major conference level. He will definitely be redshirted in his freshman year. He resembles Tahj Jones coming out of high school, but he is quicker and more of a safety prospect rather than an OLB prospect.

23 Ethan Hutson
Offensive Center/Offensive Guard
Destrehan, Louisiana
Destrehan
Ht:6'4"
Wt:295 lbs
40:5.4 secs
GPA:3.8
ACT:28
Ethan will be graduating in December of 2010 allowing him to enroll early and participate in spring ball.
Recruitment: Holds Tulane offer. Other major programs are still evaluating him. The summer camp circuit will be important for Hutson.
Junior Highlights
Unless LSU decided to take a center in this class, I would not expect Hutson to receive an LSU offer. If a couple players do not make the grades from the 2010 class, then that could open a new door for Hutson as he can count backwards as he is a fall graduate.
Hutson offers very good size and can play almost any position on the line. In his film, he plays all 3 positions, but guard or center will most likely be where he ends up at the next level. Being that he is a very intelligent kid, I would lean towards expecting him to play center due to the amount of calls required at the position. He offers good feet at the snap, but can sometimes stop driving them once contact is initiated, forcing him to play higher than needed. However, at the high school level he is able to get away with this and overpower his opponents. This is a pretty common problem with almost all offensive lineman coming out of high school, so this is no surprise. He pulls well as a guard moving well in a straight motion, but I doubt some of his lateral ability.
Ethan performed great at the recent Nike camp in Baton Rouge and was one of the best offensive lineman in attendance. Without pads, he showed excellent feet and a low center of gravity. In what is somewhat odd coming out of the high school ranks, Ethan may actually be a better pass blocker at this point than a run blocker, and he was able to show off this skill set in the Nike combine.
24 Paul Turner
Athlete/WR/CB
West Monroe, Louisiana
West Monroe
Ht:5'11"
Wt:190 lbs
Recruitment: ULM, TCU, and LA Tech have all offered. Once he attends summer circuit camps, his name could become a household name.
Junior Year Footage
Paul Turner is one of the players to watch the most over the coming summer months. He is electricity is a bottle with the ball in his hands as the Quarterback from West Monroe, but he will not play that position at the next level due to his height.
Instead, Turner will be looked upon to either play Wide Receiver or Cornerback in college. I personally think that he would be an elite cornerback--but we will not know until he performs on the summer camp circuit. He shows tremendous agility and cutting ability running with the ball offensively, and if that is any indicator of his hips as a cornerback, then Turner could be one of the biggest sleepers in the state. He has decent, not great height, so that could be one other factor that scares away some bigger colleges. He is definitely a prospect to keep an eye out for.
25 Jonah Austin
Offensive tackle/Offensive guard
New Orleans, Louisiana
St. Augustine
Ht:6'7"
Wt:305 lbs
Recruitment: Has offers from Michigan, Baylor, Tulsa, and Kentucky.
Austin is a huge man. At 6'7 305, it is easy to see why big colleges are starting to look at the tackle/guard prospect from St. Aug opposite his fellow teammate, Trai Turner.
Although Austin has better size than Turner, Trai offers more athleticism in the form of quickness and lateral movement. Both are still guards prospects for the next level, in my opinion, but Trai is ranked higher than Jonah due to better athleticism on film. Jonah plays extremely high and really overpowers his opponents. He does not show the best quickness out of his stance nor does he pull exceptionally well from the guard spot. If he can work on his speed, agility, and quickness, then Jonah can become one of the top lineman in the state. He is somewhat similar to current Tiger Josh Williford, in that they are both gigantic humans that have too much potential to overlook looking solely at the size they offer. I will be very interested to see how Jonah's body develops over the course of his senior year. For now, his strength is definitely his run blocking where he can get his 6'7 frame moving downhill.

26 Chucky Hunter
Defensive tackle
West Monroe, Louisiana
West Monroe
Ht:6'1"
Wt:294 lbs
Recruitment: Holds offers from Ole Miss, TCU, Baylor, LA Tech, Memphis, and Miss. State.
I do not expect LSU to go after Hunter this year due to a lack of available spots and the strength of the defensive tackles in LA for 2011.
Hunter is your prototypical defensive tackle prospect. He is a run stuffer that still has some speed to be able to get after the quarterback. Hunter shows strength and the ability to get off blocks. He was part of one of the state's best defensive line tandems this year with 2010 LSU commit, Jordan Allen. The one knock against Hunter is that he may not have as high of a ceiling at the next level due to his training at West Monroe. He is similar to 2009 LSU signee Josh Downs, but is more of a run stuffer and a little slower off the snap.

27 Stevie Douglas
Pro-style quarterback
Clinton, Louisiana
Home School
Ht:6'5"
Wt:180 lbs
Recruitment: Holds an offer from Memphis.
Stevie has an above average arm and excellent height. He will definitely need to add weight to his thin frame. His mechanics and overall technique will need a lot of development before he will be ready to play at the next level. One of the biggest knocks against Douglas is the level of competition he plays. He is home schooled and plays some of the worst competition in the state. There was talk that he would be transferring to play at a bigger school, but it looks like he is going to stay in the home school league. However, Douglas did have a good showing at the Tuscaloosa 7v7 tournament, which is why he has stayed ranked where he is. I expect for Douglas to be a low 3 star.

28 Rod Davis
Wide Receiver
Many, Louisiana
Many
Ht:6'4"
Wt:180 lbs
Recruitment: Holds offers from Miss. State, LA Tech, and Tulane. Interested from bigger schools is rising.
Davis is another player that could rise a lot in the coming months. He is your prototypical big bodied wide receiver. Many uses him in a variety of ways as a WR and also allows him to return punts. He is not the most flashy player in the world, but he is productive. He has above average straight line speed, but does not possess the best agility to make a defender miss. He shows good hands and has an excellent vertical leap. If LSU misses out on a couple other WR prospects, then Davis could become a premier option. He looks a little thin at this point so I am interested to see how he develops over the next year.
On another note, Rod has a long way to go academically and may not be able to qualify unless his grades improve a lot during his senior year.
29 Dak Prescott
Quarterback
Haughton, LA
Haughton HS
Height: 6'3
Weight: 215
Recruitment: Central Arkansas, Grambling, McNeese State, and Northwestern State have all offered. Kansas State is close to offering.
He is very similar to Jordan Jefferson when he was in high school, just with a weaker arm. I don't think there is much else that can be said to describe his game.
Junior Year Highlights
30 Tyler Porter
Defensive tackle
Lafayette, Louisiana
Northside
Ht:5'11"
Wt:313 lbs
Recruitment: No current offers.
A defensive tackle that shows good burst off the ball. He should rack up some offers during his senior season. He is a little on the short side, but makes up for it with very good lateral movement and his quickness off the snap. He plays with surprisingly good leverage for a high school defensive tackle from most of the film I have watched. I think he is a player that will definitely gain more recognition as the year progresses.
31 Beau Fitte
Outside linebacker
Port Sulphur, Louisiana
South Plaquemines
Ht:6'1"
Wt:210 lbs
Recruitment: Holds offers from LA Tech and LSU. Other schools like Arkansas are showing serious interest.
Fitte is an smaller framed linebacker that shows good athleticism. The available film only shows him as a rush DE so it is tough to tell how he looks in coverage. He does look to have good agility and athleticism. For now, there is not much else to go off. I would expect him to be a mid-level 3 star prospect.
No free film is available on this prospect
32 Matt Bailey
Safety
New Orleans, Louisiana
Edna Karr
Ht:5'10"
Wt:190 lbs
Recruitment: Committed to Virginia--September 9, 2009
Bailey is an undersized player, but he shows good lateral ability and uses his hands well to shed blocks. I do not think he will play OLB at the next level and will probably tend towards a SS position. He appears to diagnose plays well and has a hard nosed mentality.
33 Effrem Reed
Cornerback/Running Back
Geismar, Louisiana
Dutchtown
Ht:5'9"
Wt:173 lbs
40:4.5 secs
Vertical:33 inches
Recruitment: No offers.
Effrem is an interesting prospect to project for the next level. He shows good moves on offense and possesses above average agility. Size is a bit of an issue for Reed. He is a little short to play cornerback and does not look very big on film as a RB. I think he will have offers at both positions from varying colleges, but do not know which position he prefers playing. There is not much, if any, film of Reed on defense but he shows D1 level athleticism on offense. I expect Reed to be a mid level 3 star prospect.

Recruitment: Holds Arkansas State offer.
Shifty, slot receiver type player at the next level. Does not possess the best moves in the world or the best speed, but has D1 talent. Could potentially revert to defense and play cornerback but that is unsure as of now.
35 Gerrand Johnson
Defensive tackle
Rayville, Louisiana
Rayville
Ht:6'3"
Wt:270 lbs
Recruitment: Holds offers from Alabama, Arkansas, LA Tech, McNeese State, Memphis, Miss. State, and Nebraska
This is a player that I really needed to include in the rankings but I haven't had the chance to fully evaluate. He has an excellent offer list at this point in the game and is yet another explosive DT out of LA for 2011. Any defensive player with offers from the likes of both Nebraska and Alabama deserves a ranking in the top 35. I fully expect his stock to rise. The only negatives I have heard is his height is about 6'0.

May want to add Neville DT, Demarcus Hodge, to the watch list. He's up to 6 offers with 3 being from the SEC. Arkansas, MsState, and Tennessee respectively.

Thanks for the heads up. There are so many good DTs this year it is absurd. I just added the Porter kid (DT) out of Northshore to the top 35 and now another name pops up.
Posted on 5/15/10 at 6:09 pm to lynxcat
Porter's a beast too. The problem with hearing about Neville kids is their film doesn't get sent to the recruiting services or put on Youtube. I've mentioned Hodge on and off for the past few months but didn't think he would get this kind of attention this early. We'll see if he makes any camps and how his senior year goes.

One commits to LSU and he moves up 10 spots without playing a game?? The other moves down 4 spots after committing to Alabama?? I appreciate your work, seeing as how Bama is after a lot of these kids too, but I think your homerism is showing a little too much regarding these two players. Nice work overall though.

Alonzo Lewis dropped 9 spots? 11 to 20. Why?

Sylve was injured for the entirety of his junior season. He's recovered now and has run slower times in track than pre-injury, plus he just suffered another injury. Trai Turner on the other hand had game film released from the time of lynx's first evaluation to this newest one. Other LSU commits, Alonzo Lewis and Quentin Thomas, dropped substantially.
In other words, stop acting like a douche.

Thanks for the comments guys, both good and bad.
I completelý agree that the list needs some updating, but I'm not on my computer (posting from phone) at this time. Potentially later tonight I can update the details and change some of the evaluations.
Concerning Trai Turner, I think the previous poster covered it. There was no film available for Trai at the time of his #20 ranking. That ranking was based purely on measurables and word across different boards on potential. The first list was given out veryyy early and I mentioned that new names would emerge and major changes would occur as to the list to make it better reflect new information.
Specifically:
Trai Turner--He has grown another 2 inches and has gone from 6'2 to 6'4. His video was also released where he is an absolute mauler playing out of position as a tackle at the high school level. He is a prototypical "road grater" as a guard at the college level. I think that his bump is easily justified and I am far from being a homer.
Bradley Sylve--New information continues to emerage regarding Sylve. He has been injured for a year and everything is based off his sophomore film. While great, he had surgery and ran a slower time a year later. I do not think this enough to lower his ranking inherently as he has been reported as fully healed. HOWEVER, there are reports of another injury to him that may require surgery as well. I do not know how much of this is public knowledge at this point so I do not want to reveal too much information that some sites will consider privàte.
Q. Thomas--More film has emerged of him. He is a physical specimen but is extremely raw. He needs a lot of refining before he can be considered a top 10 prospect. I still like the pickup as he has a great frame, carries weight well, and is very athletic.
Alonzo Lewis--He is too much of a guessing game right now to be ranked at #11.He ran horribly at the AA combine and has barely caught any passes at the high school level. We aren't really sure which position he will play, with very little film existing on him. He was an early offer which is why he was ranked so high to begin and he was also one of the first 2011 kids to be a household name. However, with new information and new players jumping on the scene, a lower ranking is justified.
I feel that I have been as objective as possible. If you have any more questions or comments then I would love to hear them.

1. go after him until NSD
2. tell gonzales to find a wr from florida
