On field performance certainly matters but I think it’s easy to see why coaches and scouts value camps so much.
On field performance has so many variables - system you’re in, talent on your team, level of competition, etc. All of those variables, and more, have such a wide variance from any one player to the next.
But if you look at camps, those variables are much more neutralized and you’re grading/judging players on a much more even playing field.
I’m not saying actual games don’t matter and camps are end all be all, just that I understand why they are of such importance to scouts trying to make these really difficult judgements about thousands of players.
