Oh yes and if you add what I pay for state income taxes, property taxes and private school tuition it far exceeds what I would be paying in TX.

No it doesn't. Many of the large districts in Texas that would be analogous to BR and NO receive many of the funds generated by "robin hood".

If we did away with the homestead exemption for education purposes only, you would see better schools in our state.
And those who own homes would once again pay the bulk, while those in trailers/renting, etc., get the free benefits. That's just wrong. Tax everyone, or tax no one.

You would send your kid(s) to public school in Texas?
I live in a modest home in a school district that is very competitive property tax-wise and my county/school district taxes are comparable to what I paid in Louisiana. I can't imagine drawing your same conclusion if I was sending kids to some of the private schools around here with tuition higher than LSU's.

Great facility!!! The Woodlands Baseball Facility was voted #1 in the country a couple years ago. There is a lot of work put in by the parents and financial support generated by the High School Booster clubs as well

and the resident will complain about the increase in property taxes the following year

Actually, I grew up in Baton Rouge and went from paying no property tax to roughly 2K/yr here in the Woodlands. There is no sales tax for Groceries. All in all there is probably a zero net difference but the schools and facilities are better here. We still miss the people back home and the good food. That cannot be replaced.

My sister lives in the Woodlands and the schools, facilities, and teachers are out of this world....nice to see the public school system working somewhere.....

This is the reason why I want to coach in TX instead of LA
Many people in Louisiana have for the most part bailed out on the public school system compared to other states. We have a large population of private school kids (as a percentage) compared to other states. This has a big effect on many public school districts. Those schools athletic programs like West Monroe, St. Charles Parish, Acsension Parish, and Zachary are doing OK because most people still send their kids to the public schools. The middle class people still buy in to the schools in these districts. Most of these parishes pay their coaches well to.

Most people I know send their kids to private schools in LA to seperate their kids from what they see as an undesirable element. They don't want their kids exposed to a certain segment of the population. It is not for religious reasons. The public school system is only as good as the parents that support it. It is no accident that poverty correlates directly with low test scores and wealth correlates with higher test scores. Some wealthy areas of the country have public schools so good you take a step down when going to private schools. These areas have the best facilities often times.

I'm coaching at a good school and don't want to go to Tx at all. I've got good kids, parents, talent, and a solid teaching schedule.

Don't get me wrong about the schools here.. There are still issues. There is a great deal of drug and alcohol abuse with the jr high and high school group. Additionally, the sense of entitlement here amongst the youth is amazing.

good for you. i think the taj majah sports palaces over here are a disgrace. taxpayer money that could be spent a hell of a lot better than on high school football. i pay a lot more more taxes than anywhere i've lived (La, Tn, Ga, Fla)and i don't like it being spent frivioulsly. not that the other states didn't waste a lot of it. still, i would like less taxes or wiser spending. you'd better hope you get paid more over here so you too can pay these taxes. no kidding, you can pay property taxes of twelve to sixteen thousand a year for just a $300,000 house.

Already explained what I meant further into the thread. I paid the same amount for an apartment there as I did for one in LA. So it really was like living tax free. Back in LA and I pay more for my house than I did that apartment. I also pay state income tax, grocery tax, and every other kind of tax here. Living in both places I definitely had more money at the end of the day in Texas.
