This class still needs a good LB, DT and IOL guard

Assuming Heard commits...we need a really good linebacker... and a defensive tackle... and a top notch IOL guard.

Mostly agree. I think we need Heard plus 2 more Olinemen.
I would say at least 1 300 pound interior defensive lineman and 2 linebackers.

I almost wonder if the best value in the transfer portal is LB.
My rationale is if you go get a high profile kid in the portal, you get someone with experience and years in college S&C programs. Breaking in LBs are hard because they have lots of duties against the run and pass.

Oh good point.... IOL and Linebacker is where you could really go after portal kids... kids that finish growing somewhere else and can come in and play right away.

Going into senior year, frame is more important than weight. With likely 2 years of development until seeing playing time in college, someone with the right frame at 270 could grown into a 300-310lb NT. I'd honestly rather that than the guys at 300+ lb going into senior year who's weight constantly have to be watched. The way the game has evolved, speed and conditioning are important along the DL.

NT better be 325 or better once he develops in our system. I think we need both. The lighter 300/310 lb DT who can create havoc in the backfield and get down the line quickly but we also need that big 330 lb Tyler Shelvin type or go real heavy along the 3 man front with speed on the outside for some situations.
The NFL might be able to get away with going a little lighter but this isn’t pro athletes. We don’t have 10 year players here or the ability for a team to stay together and grow for 5 plus years. That makes all the difference in the world and offsets that weight discrepancy. Not in college it won’t work like that.
What you don’t want to do is be caught in a game where their offense can just push you all over the field or even push you 3 yards off the ball on every snap with no let up and you have no options to get heavy inside. That sucks! No matter what you do, they will gain 5 yards and if you bring too many people in the box to stop it, they’ll just go over your head or block one side perfectly and we’ve all seen how that works.
Les Miles used to do that to everyone and those other teams couldn’t do a darn thing about it. Only problem is that Miles didn’t have the rest of the offense properly maintained to make you pay over the top consistently. We’d also make stupid mistakes and kill ourselves. Those types of teams suck to play but if you get them in long yardage situations, it’s a punt.
If Les Miles would have recruited decent QBs here with polished WRs like we have now, those teams would have killed people. It was my most frustrating thing about that man and his offenses. I just never understood why he didn’t take full advantage of his physical style of run game. Some easy crossing routes coupled with go routes with some PA and a decent QB and we would have made teams cry. Oh well, now we have a coach who does believe in this exact style of play! I can’t wait to see it!

Atkins is raw but he is going to be one helluva a Linebacker, once he gets here (nutrition, coaching). I think before he leaves he’s All-SEC player. At 16 he’s 6’1” 206lbs, by 19 he’ll be probably 6’2”-3”, 225lbs easily
