The fact that we might waste this guy's WR skills by playing him at safety or God-forbid cornerback is beyond me.

The fact is LSU currently lists Simon as a WR. I was told by a coach that he'll get a look at WR first, but that he's a gifted athlete and could play a number of positions.
Morris Claiborne did the same his first fall camp before moving over to CB exclusively.

When was the last time a 6'2" CB did anything of warrant? Antonio Cromartie is basically the biggest CB in the league at 6'2" and he's overrated. You find me an athlete at 6'4" who has the hips to be an elite cover corner and I'll find you Clark Kent.
I'd be less shocked if they played him at safety although I still think he should be a WR. Guys with mean streaks on defense are a dime a dozen. A WR, however, with his size and attitude is tough to find. You probably weren't around then, but this same argument came up when Michael Clayton signed with LSU. Luckily for us and for him the coaches chose correctly. I just hope our current coaches do the same.

Edited:
I heard he got a 27 on one part, an upper mid 20's on another part, and those two parts were math and science.
He scored his usual 12-14 on the other two parts to get a composite of 19.
This is approximately the fifth time he takes it. The other times he has gotten anywhere from a 12 to 14.
As an LSU fan, I hope this score gets upheld. As a person, I'm not so sure how I feel about it.

Dandy Don says Simon & Blue are qualified & Mathieu is close:
quote:
I have also received reports that running back Alfred Blue from Hahnville (6'2", 195) passed the ACT and has the GPA, and likewise for Tharold Simon (6'3", 200, ATH) who will likely play safety in college. I also learned that Tyrann Mathieu (DB, 5'10", 175) from ST Augustine is very close to being eligible to play as a true freshman. I was told a few days ago that counting Blue, Simon and Mathieu there were five signees who were not fully qualified, and if my unofficial information is correct on the three aforementioned players, then perhaps only two signees are not qualified.

I would love to see him at corner if he has the skills to play it.

he will start out as a freshmen as a split end (easier to learn the basic route tree on the outside first - like Randle did) but he will eventually be a flanker/slot receiver (to replace Randle)
and he will be damn good
and he will be damn good

Arguably one of the top 5 cornerbacks of all time--Steeler great Mel Blount--6'3" or 6'4" depending on what website you look at--
Also submitted--Mike Haynes--Patriot and Raider great--top 5 as well--a legit 6'2" shutting them down.
It can be done gentlemen. They are definitely outliers, but the precedent has been already set.

by today's standards Mel Blount would be slow and playing SS. Part of the reason the NFL passed the Mel Blount rule is because he used his physicality to beat up WRs instead of just running with them
a tall CB is at a disadvantage (theoretically) because of his higher center of gravity makes it tougher for him to turn his hips and his chest on the run. Scouts think the perfect CB is 5'11 to 6'0. Short enough to be able to turn on a dead run and tall/strong enough to jump with 6'4 WRs

Thank you! The fact that someone used Mel Blount as an example for a tall corner's success is absurd. DBs all-but tackled WRs back when he played. He would absolutely be a SS if he played in today's game.

Yea there's no 6'4" athlete with the hips to play corner, it's just not possible.

The last good cb I remember being that tall(6'3) was Bobby Taylor for the Eagles when they had Troy Vincent. He was really good for a 3-4 year stretch and solid before and after that. Not a HOF but he was good.Wasn't a real quick hips guy though. He was a technical cb with physicality.

For the record I hope Simon is a WR, but Brandon Browner at Oregon State wasn't bad. He didn't make it in the NFL but I don't really care because we are talking about college. Definitely agree it is rare for anyone that big to be able to do it.

How many on this board, who know so much, have actually watched this kid play in a game. How many here have watched him practice and run through drills. Im going to bet there are only a handful. The rest of you are projecting him at WR and S because thats where most 6-4 athletes play or end up. Maybe, just maybe its possible Simon will make a great CB. From his highlights I havent seen anything to show me that he cant. And actually he looks incredible in coverage.
He will most likely start out at corner seeing as we will have a greater need at this position than at WR. But I have no doubts he can play S or WR too. What a GREAT problem to have.
