I write copy and no, I would never allow anyone to overwrite my headline or ever submit something without it.
Not only that, but the headline is almost a verbatim reproduction of the concluding line of the article. So yes, the headline was written by Matt.

No he isn't. take a deep breath. It'll be ok.
Imo the headline must be working because it's getting publicity.

Apparently you don't write copy for a journalistic publication, because a lot of the time journalists and sportswriters don't have a choice. Headline writing is a completely different skill than is writing an article. Some people have both, some don't.

No one here said the article was any good. But it isn't verbatim at all. And even if it were a direct quote from the story, it doesn't mean he wrote the headline for the story. As a former government reporter, there were times when the copy desk pulled a line directly from one of my stories (sometimes out of context) and used it as a headline.
So... it's not unlikely that he didn't write the headline.
This is all semantics really. But your attitude was kind of shitty. So I thought I'd spread a little knowledge.

He may not have written the headline, but when he ends with the following, he doesn't really have a leg to stand on when defending himself against that headline:

Or Scott could pick LSU and save Miles from yet another embarrassment on National Signing Day.
