Call me crazy but we’ve missed on in state defensive linemen. Should we have paid 7-8 figures for Freak Johnson or Maason Smith? This guy didn’t play as much high school ball as those two and they were “locks” to be elite. Both were average
Ok, but Glenn Dorsey, Chad Lavalais, Kyle Williams, Bennie Logan, etc are Louisiana guys that were worth that
And I’ve been pretty clear on the red flags regarding Stewart

LSU is insane if they pay big $$$ for a DE. They more a crapshoot than the QB.
Our best defensive players are consistently people with high upside and some hype that we develop.
Not people that come in and anoint the next big thing. Not sure even Stingley was expected to be as good as he was as a FR.
Seems most of our great DL are those home grown high upside 3/4s.

Eventually, sure. Freshmen, no.

Yea but that’s the game now. Dorsey would have commanded that out of HS too.

The problem I see, is that these guys get the money and just lay on your leg.
Maybe throw one season down, and lay up the rest of the time. Run half speed, etc. no incentive to actually try hard.

I understand what you’re saying but when you’re throwing around money like what the OP is saying, for a kid that has played 10 games in high school, that’s just dumb. At least the portal, you know what you’re getting. This kid could be a huge bust or a huge boom, there just isn’t enough tape to know. Ask yourself this, would we be throwing this money around if he weren’t from Louisiana? If we pay him premium just because he is from
This is the key. There could be DL worth a huge investment, but a kid with this little tape and experience who is re-classifying- that’s a big risk, as much raw talent as he has.

Told yall USC was throwing a bag at him.
Literally 2 mil a year is crazy!
He committed for a few reasons. The DL coach is from NOLA, more money, and immediate playing time.
Here’s good news, this time next year he may very well transfer back because Lincoln Riley is a horrendous recruiter. The AD here has no idea what to do because SC is recently coming off sanctions and have spent a lot of money on new facilities. Lincoln essentially has next year or he is out. They don’t know who their main starter at QB will be. The class is littered with only 3 and 4 stars and Stewart is the jewel of their class.
There is a high school here Mater Dei High that puts out loads of talent and not one recruit went to USC. Literally 35 miles away from USC. Shameful what Riley has been getting away with.

Yall got it wrong. We should be able to discount the NIL money for in state players that really want to play for LSU. The Michigan people look like idiots having to pay $12 mil to a kid who lives 30 minutes away.

Start at 500,000 per year. If he makes all sec freshman team, up it 50% the soph year to 750,000 per year. If he makes all american 1st or 2nd team his soph year, give him 1 million for every year he remains at LSU.

He would have made 2 mil easy branding his self in his home state. That 2 mil isn’t worth the same in Cali!
This recruitment was not like Underwood & Phillips, he was being shopped around from the start. Hope it works out for the kid long term.
