Rivers dad is a very successful high school coach in Alabama. He moved to Raleigh for a short time while Philip was at NC State and had some good results as well. Wonder if he'll move to Baton Rouge to follow Stephen?

I watched Philip play for 4 years at NCSU ... basically the same motion (including the "hop"). Norm Chow considered trying to change his throwing motion, but thought better of it and let it be. I'd say it worked out OK.

Well, damn. Good pickup

He looks the part for sure. Funky mechanics but that's not a big deal imo.

The staff wanted Ely....So this means they know Rivers commitment won't effect Ely or they know Ely wasn't going to choose us anyway.

I don't think this effects Ely at all.

6' 6".

Has the same genes as Phillip Rivers.

Good enough for me.

He may eventually turn out to be the crown jewel of this recruiting class.

I'm sure just about everyone out here who has their favorites that they would take slightly higher than their worth and vice versa.

I will let a player slide a little because of the same. HOWEVER, if he slides too far, and his value far outweighs his draft slot, regardless of his attitude, I'd take him.

Wouldn't it suck if a player you blackballed, and could have easily had over the other guy you drafted, beats you in the championship game?

I still want Ely. Rivers is going to be a project, but if he turns out anything like his brother, then we will have a player.

His brother was also considered to be a project. It's why Philip didn't get offers from Auburn or Alabama.

I like it too. If you read on Saturday Night Slant the writer almost hits this situation on the head.

quote:

4. Stephen Rivers - 6-6/200 Athens, AL Athens HS - This kid has late bloomer written all over him. Remember his brother? NFL QB for the San Diego Chargers! Phillip Rivers! None of the big boys recruited him and he ended up at NC State and just happened to break many school and conference records. Just like Phillip, Stephen seems to be just an average QB with the same unorthodox throwing motion! But many schools thought that Phillip would never be a college caliber QB. Today he is a top ten QB in the NFL. It is believed that if LSU offers Stephen, he will commit. If the first two guys on the list decide to go elsewhere, expect Rivers to be offered. I am of the opinion that over the next 4-5 years, Rivers will develop into a great college QB. I'd offer him now and take the first QB to commit.

There's a lot to like really. He has size, upside, bloodlines, etc. At least we have a QB in this class.

It would but it would also really suck to have to watch someone I hate and actually hope he does well EVERY WEEK.

Plus he is a QB so I would not be stuck in the position where I had no choice to take him bc most leagues only play 1 QB at a time and its not like he is a 1st or 2nd rd pick (Plenty of QBs as good if not better than him).

If I hated Chris Johnson and he feel to me in the end of the 1st rd or something than I would have no choice.

I liked a lot about the kid, but for a 6'5" kid he has a VERY weak arm. In the one youtube video of him, I don't think I saw him lead one receiver on a deep route. He is definitely a project, but I like the measurables. Welcome to LSU
