What is the point of a silent commitment? If a prospect is committed to you, why would he keep it a secret? Seems like the same commitment you have to your 2 am booty call - none! ( I am new to the board, so sorry if this has been addressed already)

Lots of reasons...to name a few:
Peer pressure.
Wants to announce it at a scheduled date.
Wants to enjoy the process until the big signing day.

Any idea if those commitments are more or less likely to actually sign than those who openly announce? Does it usually come out after signing day which guys were a silent commitment?

I wouldn’t put much, if any, weight to a silent commit.
Sometimes it is a serious commitment but more often then not, it’s a kid that wants to get pressure off of their back from a coaching staff.

I think LSU is the king of receiving silent commits only to have them flip when the commitment date arrives.

Why wouldn’t you want to make it pulic? Then you could actively help “recruit “ other players who would want to play with you to that school. Some player might be on the fence on committing, but if they see that 5 Star Player X committed, then that might be the tipping point to get them to follow.

Are like silent pharts. They might seem cool at the time bc nobody can prove it but at the end of the day you can't really celebrate them

Depending on the kid, a silent commit could be just as strong a as a verbal. Neither is binding. Both amount to the recruit giving his word or indication to a coach of his intent to play there.

There are three main reasons for silent commits. The first often has to do with all star games where the kids get to do that hats on the table thing.

The second related reason is attention. Kids who are not verbally committed get more hype. Most highly rated kids want to play pro ball. Some kids enjoy the attention and the hype of being on the market. Kids who hold out can see their rankings spike, because recruiting services are money driven and late commitments drive traffic to their sites.

Many schools will let kids give a verbal and still shop around. The better you are, the more likely a school will let you shop. Some kids think of a silent commit as something less than a verbal, they can enjoy their free visits to other schools more without be8ng formally committed.

It’s kind of dumb to think silent commits don’t mean anything, that would presume every kid who tells a coach he is coming is lying. It’s also dumb to think all kids who give silent commits are coming. Nkemdiche is one example of a kid who supposedly was silently committed to LSU, but was likely never coming here.

In general a verbal > silent > no verbal or silent.

Easy, the Recruit wants to take all of his trips. Have 4 others paid vacations (weekend).

I never said it has no meaning, I just wouldn’t put a ton of weight behind it.

I also never said a kid would be lying, he might get caught up in the moment, commit and not want it public because he knows of the backlash he may receive.
Imagine a kid at Dutchtown in Baton Rouge committing to Bama...sound familiar?

There are a ton of reasons to commit and decommit. The strength of the commitment all depends on the kid and their particular situation.

However, after following recruiting for over 15 years, I don’t put a lot of weight behind silent commits.
They more often than not sign else where.

Just from my experience.

It happens frequently when kids promise an All-Star game that they will commit on air, but also want to commit to a school before the All-Star game.
