IMO, not many receivers are. Doucet got a bad rap coming out of college because he was overshadowed by Bowe and Davis, perhaps unfairly, and then got hurt for a good portion of his senior season when those two had moved on to the NFL. Then, he went and ran a slow time at the combine and his draft stock plummeted.

But Arizona saw Antoine Boldin, Jr., and that is truly what Doucet is (although I think he's a little shorter).

Doucet will end up playing on the edge somewhere, IMO. If he keeps playing like he is playing right now, Arizona will not be able to keep him and Boldin. He will be a primary or secondary receiver for some team, somewhere down the line.

ETA: Anquan Boldin

The point I was trying to make is the Mitchels and Jackson were not very good at being slot guys. They dropped ball and I can't seem to remember any of them ever making a big play. You don't have to have speed to play the slot but you need great hands, tuffness and wiggle. Again we haven't had someone like this since ED was here.

Hopefully we will see more utilization of our "slot" guys now that Gonzalez is working with our passing game. I'd love to see it.

What about a guy like a Golden Tate or Steve Smith.

Yep, those are the guys who defy the prototypes.

This is sort of my hope, although I'd be happy stopping short of that but seeing the TE position get the same sort of touches they do at Florida.

It seems to me that you need a quarterback who can get the ball quickly and accurately to the slot guys, which takes timing and I would think confidence. Maybe our slot reciever use will go up as our quarterback's decision making speeds up and confidence increases?

Assuming it does...

Well, if we ever had a WR with big play potential at the slot position, its this year with Shep. Granted they give him one position, allow him to learn it, and find ways to get him the ball.

So to answer your question. With BG here at LSU now, depending on how much we get Shep the ball as a slot WR, will change my answer on whether or not we "need" slot receivers.

I think with as much team speed as LSU has now and has had in the past, we should utilize slot WR much much more. The fact that we havent, is a failure on our part IMO to utilize the talent we have. Especially when we lack a QB who can consistently make smart plays down field in a timely matter (that goes for both Lee and JJ).

I thought Murphy was going to be that guy but he does not appear to be elusive in real time.

To actually answer the question, of course, yes, if you were a coach recruiter and you see a guy with the moves and the sense to get to the 3rd level, recruit him.

My feeling is that there are a few guys on the current commit list who could play the slot. Mr Gore, I betcha.

I was thinking maybe Lache gets a look at the slot and could be used like Reggie Bush.

At Oregon, they're going to use him all over the field....

First, this is college football, so you have to use what you have, whether they fit the bill as a slot reciever or not. I don't think Jared Mitchell, C. Mitchell or Dixon were "slot receivers", but they weren't as good as the starting outside guys, so they play the slot. Same as Early not being as seasoned as Bowe and Buster, so he played the slot.

Our slot guys this year were really RJ Jackson who did catch 11 passes and Trindon Holliday who they rarely if ever threw the ball to. We were a little thin at WR (our talent was inexperienced wise thin) this year and will be again next year. When we are deeper talent wise, then the slot receiver will be much more important.

What the hell is a slot receiver specifically? I thought it had to do with where and how a player lines up rather than his physical characteristics. The best receiver to ever play the game lined up interchangeably as a wide out and in the slot. The 49ers would put Jerry Rice in the slot and send him in motion to prevent opponents from double covering him.

The wide receivers at LSU should be capable of making plays no matter where they line up. Matters of routes and read progressions have been more determinative of catches by players lining up in the slot than athletic skills.

i would love to see LSU recruit the typical texas tech type inside slot receiver. with the LSU problems at quarterback coupled with the SEC speed of linebackers, a quick pass to a doucet type player would be $$$.

If you have a less than stellar OL, you need to get the passes off quickly. My main frustration this year was pass routes that took an eternity to develop and JJ holding the ball until they were completely open - sack city. Quick slants to a slot guy are the remedy for this, and I hope it gets done next year.
