LSU didn’t sign a top 10 OT before Garrett Delinger going back to Alan Faneca

Well, first off, Dellinger was OT12. And second off, they absolutely have signed top 10 OTs since faneca. La'el collins was OT2. Deculus was OT10. Dumervil was OT11, which isn't t10 but is higher than dellinger. Toby Weathersby was OT6 and Chidi Okeke was OT7 in 2015 (though this appears to be an outlier in terms of being a weak tackle class). Ethan Pocic was OT5. And i don't feel like digging any further back than that.

it’s a little tiring how people across recruiting services are so reluctant to talk about how the sausage is made and possibly show criticism for the industry.

I know nobody is interested in hearing this and would prefer to just continue shitting on 247, but you can easily hear about how they put their rankings together if you take a moment to seek that content out. Listen to Bud Elliot on cover 3 or various other pods--he often discusses things that go into formulating the rankings. Before he joined cover 3, they had barton simmons (now the GM of vandy football but previously a 247 guy) who did the same. You can get even more of it if you listen to recruiting specific pods.

Also, i know that we all want to be angry about Mason taylor's rankings... but go back and just look at pictures and film of him in HS. He does *not* look like a high-major player. In the picture he took on one of the big recruiting weekends with a bunch of other guys in the class, he stands out as an outlier in terms of his body being underdeveloped. Size and appearance isn't everything by any means, but go check out some pictures and clips of mason taylor from HS and compare those to some of the TEs who got a 4th star, then tell me if you still think it was unreasonable for him to be ranked where he was. Some guys are just late bloomers, simple as that. It seems that's the case, here.

(Also, how about we let the kid play literally one single snap of college football before complaining about how terrible his ranking was).

I am sure there's a method to madness but there's literally no reason guys like Sampson should be losing stars when, as you said, not a snap of football has been played.

This is only true if you're operating under the assumption that every scout at every recruiting service has consumed and synthesized 100% of the available information on 100% of recruits in the database. Which obviously isnt the case. Guys get bumped or dropped because people learn new things about them. It's perfectly possible for that to happen even if no on-field games have been played.

These guys are talking to HS coaches, talking to college coaches, watching old tape, pouring through athletic testing numbers--all for hundreds upon hundreds of kids. The idea that ratings should be completely static because the season hasn't yet started is silly. There are only so many hours in the day, and the guys who make these rankings can't possibly consume *every* piece of info on *every single kid*. They're constantly learning more.

(Also, I will note once more that it wasn't even 247 who dropped Sampson, it was Rivals.)
