I agree ELT29. I think Jay needs to address the situation since falling short last season and the implosion we witnessed this season. LSU Gymnastics fans deserve more feedback on future training and mental preparation rather than hearing how much talent is on the team with a bright future ahead. We all recognize the talent but without mental toughness and better preparation, talent can fall short as it has for the past couple of years

He made comments to a reporter after the meet
Here is what he said after nationals the year before
quote:
“We’re all hurt, devastated and disappointed,” LSU coach Jay Clark said. “I just hurt for the kids. It’s painful for all of us. To have it end this way is as disappointing a moment in my 32-year career as I can remember.”
“They’re mental mistakes,” Clark said. “They’re not physical mistakes, trying to get the right mentality.”
“The mistakes that we saw today, just like in SECs, are not things that we see in the gym,” Clark said. “I told them in the end, ‘I feel like I failed you.' ”
“Look, there’s not a bad thing I’ll say about any of these kids, and I’ve got to be able to prepare them, and when they feel weak, I’ve got to help them feel strong," he said. "It’s on me.
“We will figure it out. We will be back, and we’re not going anywhere.”

“That was a hard one to take,” head coach Jay Clark said. “It is obviously really disappointing and the girls are hurting. We are all hurting. It will sting for a long time, but the future of this program is so bright and we will use it as fuel to get better. This was a great team that did some special things. I would not want to be with anyone else on that floor tonight.”

Thanks for the link. He looks so sad, which he should be. It looked like it took a lot for him to force a smile. I'm glad that he mentioned that he thinks Olivia will do beam...finally!!
Posted on 4/6/22 at 11:21 pm to LauraGB
Ok. But if Olivia was the future of beam - WHY IN THE WORLD HAS SHE NEVER DONE IT BEFORE???? Like this is what is mind boggling - she’ll have two years left, apparently be counted on as past of what will be an exceptionally young bema lineup in terms of experience and will not have (I don’t think) ever done a competition beam set.
An important question to ask here would be why? What was the strategy? And, I agree with the above poster who said that Mike is too nice to ask the hard questions. Honestly, if this were ANY other sport, especially men’s, heads would be rolling and the press would be all over it. I hope for a more in-depth interview/press conference at some point.

There’s a rumor Bridget dean is coming back for a sixth year (did she redshirt her freshman year?). I’m not mad about it if true!

Sigh. I actually love Bridget’s consistency (and I believe she is most improved in that class from beginning to end), but having her in the lineup is probably not our best scoring one with her built in form deductions (especially with the other beam lineups around the country, many of which will substantially be returning) - and honestly, I just feel like it is time for all of them to go.

Well she would make a great leadoff and at least we know Jay will only use her on beam and not try to do more with her.

I’m ok with Dean coming back. She would be a great lead off. However, I don’t understand why she would want to come back, especially with the rest of her class moving on.

Don't understand this. They exhibition her the year before, its a nice beam set (but they need to scratch the switch half).

I don’t think she has finished grad school and I think all the girls love gym and her body seems to have held up best.

No One needs a switch half!

Thanks tigerbait - yes I saw those quotes I was meaning one of the usual weekly Lsu press conferences mid week. Not sure why when football etc would be made to front up to the media ??.

TB357,do you know if Kiya is going to championships next week? It wasn't mentioned in the Gymnastics Segment yesterday.
ETA: My question was just answered on LSU Twitter. LSU finally announced that Kiya will compete vault at championships.

I think Bridget is useful on beam. The bent knees on her series is the biggest deduction. Her leap series has improved over the years and she should change from layout to tuck like Aleah for her dismount. Considering beam being our nemesis the last few years she is a bright spot because she always hit when it counts. She’s one tough cookie and they will need that with so many unknowns and unproven gymnast in the event for us.

If u can’t teach gymnast new techniques for bar dismounts, why not put Aleah or Alexis in. They both had nice routines and actual dismounts. Elena has struggled more than anything with her dismount. Idk if Durante was injured and didn’t say anything and I hate to pin point her out but she was a let down last year and this year for post season. Christina has had a reputation of falling at least once during the post season but this one was on the coaches. They should’ve taken out the triple series in Aleah’s routine with a fall already. Coming from a freshman that was a lot of unnecessary pressure. As the coach, it’s your job to prepare these gymnast for a little adversity. Yes mental toughness is either u have it or not, but as he always says talent is there. We never see this in the gym. Well of coarse not, the gym is totally different than when your in a meet, competition , win/lost , and championships on the line. Your nerves and adrenaline get to you. It’s up to the coaches to be the strength when mistakes happen and help your team as best as possible. There getting paid alot of money to be in charge of all aspects of being a coaching staff. Look on the flip side at a Denver team. They were tough, never gave up with all those season ending injuries but ran out of depth and talent to really push for nationals. They seemed so happy competing even with what they had gone through. They had a successful season in my eyes. We didn’t . Point blank

If you are gonna put it in the routine, they need to be able to hit the split and full rotation. If not you're throwing in a built in deduction.
But it has no business being in Dunne's routine as she doesn't come close to hitting the switch half anyways. Just do switch leap to split jump and call it a day. Let’s give the athlete something they can execute well and consistently.
I thought Kiya was much more relaxed on beam this year after taking it out

At this stage of LSU gymnastics anything less than being in the finals is damn near a catastrophe.
Posted on 4/8/22 at 2:06 pm to SLIPSHITE
Which is why I think the performance in this year's post-season deserves a true press conference - where hard questions are asked and where Jay is held accountable for the outcome, based on whatever decisions he made.

Wow.
So last year...
This year...
Last year...
This year...
So he pretty much just repeated what he said last year.
I do think this team will be better next year. I've said that all year long. I'm looking forward to it. No super seniors that he has to show a blind loyalty to.
