How do these recruits afford to go to all these camps around the country? Do they just count as official visits so the school pays for it?

I have no idea and I’m genuinely curious because there’s no way I could afford to take my son to camps out of state all summer.

The camps themselves cost from $20 - $50 generally.

The real cost is travel and lodging. Some kids come for a day only and maybe a coach will drive 2 or 3 kids to the camp (The one "star" and a couple of people that he hopes to help get noticed)

If the kids stay for the weekend - they have to find a hotel, etc. When I was young and traveling for sports - we'd pile in 3 or 4 in a room type stuff.

Many kids will go to their local big one (think of a New Orleans or Baton Rouge kid going to LSU) and at least one other Big one (maybe get hotel at Bama?). the other camps may be just a one day thing - drive over, camp, drive back.

Like anything else: Some parents are willing to pay for their kids to do these things and put it on credit cards or get family to help pay, etc.

Camp admission is probably waived for the highly sought after recruits.

I’m no expert, but I think that wouldn’t be permissible.

Bag man isn’t far from the truth. A lot of times it’s the HS booster club paying. It’s not always about recruiting. It’s a chance for a player or players and probably a coach to learn at these camps.

Sometimes it’s a single booster stepping up or a parent of one kid pays the expenses for 3 or 4 guys attending the camp. A bag man could easily enter the picture without anyone being suspicious.
