I see that we have 7 TE/FB on the roster and only 2 are seniors. Given that we are going to a 3 wide, 1 TE, 1 RB scheme, why are we recruiting a TE this year?
I don't worry about stars when the coaches want someone, but I see a shortage of OLB (only 6) on this team.
I would think that we need to use the scholarship on an OLB.

Ensminger seems to want to run a bunch of 2 TE sets.

Theoretically, a tight end/h-back could be placed in the slot to cause mismatches with linebackers and also offer better blocking to seal the edge. Doing this with someone like carter or the new recruit we picked up, you could line a more traditional tight end (Moreau, pettigrew) on the line as well.

We can still be a spread team, just using an h back instead of a slot guy for better blocking on zones and off tackles

Tight ends are a luxury. Find a good one and you have a miss match versus every team you play. Also I would be shocked if the offense doesn’t look similar to last year minus the motion. Single back with multiple tight ends in the formations.

OLB is fine because 60%+ of the time the team is playing nickle.

TK McClendon could be a LB or DE anyway and he is the only one listed at TE in this class.

Think of a lot of these guys as hybrids. Pettigrew was split out at winde receiver a lit during the spring game.

I say keep recruiting them. Good tight ends are Paramount to a good running game! Guys like JD moore, Dillon Gordon, Colin Jeter, Nic Jacobs etc...were awesome! All of these guys could could stymy a defensive end and drive a linebacker 5 yards back. We will ALWAYS need great blockers

Word is Thaddeus Moss has been balling out and could end up catching quite a few passes this season. Also pettigrew has come along nicely as well. The tight end spot is one that can be exploited by big fast pass catchers in every level. Linebackers are too slow and dbs are too small. That's the whole thing. So how you would not see a team with a few options at the spot when it's such a mismatch is a question for the style of offense. In terms of how that affects the Linebacking corps..like you have to understand that while they have 6 OLB, they also have that many middle guys too. And only 3-4 play on a given down and honestly 65-75 percent of the time it's only the two middle linebackers that are out there. All of those linebackers are able to play every one of the more traditional spots on defense. That means each LB spot but the buck. The buck spot is a passrl rusher that is traditionally a stand up 3-4 OLB or a 4-3 weak side end. And they exclusively play that spot for aranda. But white, Phillips, Taylor, all these guys play everything. The field lb is only on the play like a fraction of the time in base D so the numbers of kids at LB don't exactly bear out what we actually use at the spot any given gameday. We are a "3-4" but in reality we are actually a nickel 3-3-5 or 5-2 base more than anything.

I remember Ken Adams was listed as a TE when he signed, and obviously ended up a 2 year starter at DE.

If you dont see 3-4 wide sets I think there could be a good chance you'll see two Te's in the game. Pretty sure E commented on that a while back. Less power formations with a fullback and more spread concepts.
