Portal "Rankings" are Trash

These outlets try to use their incorrect high school evaluations to determine market value.
They refuse to admit that they whiffed on evaluation, if they even did one at all.
Goes the other way for low ranked or unranked players in portal that actually produced in college.

The biggest thing to remember about all of these rankings is that if the guys doing them were actually good at evaluating talent, they'd be on a coaching staff somewhere.

The 247 rankings look like they're heavily recycled from high school rankings. Once again, On3 is becoming the leading edge for rankings.
A few examples.
On3 has QBs Uiagalelei, McCord, and Moore down from can't miss 5 stars to mid range 4 stars. Meanwhile G5 WR standouts like Trey Moore and Caullin Lacy have jumped from unranked/low 3 to a solid 4 star ranking.

Not defending them because they are given a level of respect and authority that they don't deserve and haven't earned, but portal rankings are a crapshoot.
There are some slam dunk prospects, but how do you rank a 5-star freshman in the portal that sat behind a veteran senior at his previous stop, who may also have been a 5-star?
He likely has very little tape or playing time to evaluate on.
Then, you have a productive G5 or FCS player; how will that player translate?
Then there is the time aspect: They evaluate high school players for years. Some of these portal players are in the portal one day and they have them ranked the next.
So, you are correct that the rankings are trash, but I'm not sure how they can improve.

But overall I agree with your point.
