We meaning LSU, I suppose.

But what if someone was SUPPOSED to graduate in December, which would have created the spot for Miller to EE...and that someone DIDN'T graduate, and has to come back for the spring semester to graduate? Hmmm...what it?
If that is indeed what happened, we probably knew far enough in advance (at least as early as right after the end of finals, when seniors scheduled to graduate get their grades, and we probably had a good inkling well before then given the rumors about Lee's grades) to avoid this situation at this time. I would imagine we at least knew before we accepted Gunner's commitment several days after Christmas, though considering all the variables I don't really have a problem with the coaches essentially picking Gunner over Miller for that last early enrollee spot, and rolling the dice that Miller would agree to pay his own way or delay enrollment. Regardless, it's still a screw-up to promise something you ultimately can't deliver.

Losing his LSU recruiter also had an effect:
Ultimately though, it appears that a culmination of circumstances led to the shocking announcement in Jan. '12 that Miller had switched his commitment to AU, already enrolled in school, and had attended his 1st class all in the same week. Those "circumstances", as it turned out included the fact that the LSU staff had ultimately had too many players for their 2012 class (including Miller) who wanted to enroll early for their Spring semester. Apparently, Miles and Co. asked Miller and his family if they would mind paying their own way for that 1st semester, so that they could get around the rule that would prevent them from providing scholarships for all their "early enrollees. Add to that the fact that Miller's main recruiter from LSU, receivers Coach Billy Gonzales, who had been recruiting him for 2 years, abruptly left Baton Rouge to take the OC position at Illinois. All of this, plus Miller's original strong feelings toward Auburn, his future teammates, and coaches led him to make the switch.

Here's a video with his coach explaining how this transpired. Don't know if it's been posted or not.

This really makes me angry. The coaches basically turned down a big time OL prospect with tons of potential because they did not plan properly.

Just another example of lack of paying attention to the details.

you're wrong, per rivals article.

quote:

According to the NCAA's replacement rule, a university can put on scholarship as many early enrollees as scholarship athletes graduate in December. There were five scholarship players who graduated in December. There were six Tigers commitments who intended to enroll in January

quote:

The five scholarship players who graduated were Will Blackwell, T-Bob Hebert, Mitch Joseph, Jarrett Lee and James Stampley. Lee earned his degree after winter intercession, which ended Jan. 4. Stampley, originally a walk-on, was placed on scholarship this past semester

There is some misinformation in this thread.

LSU didn't make a mistake at all in this situation. Would you rather they just turn down Kiel?

The Miller situation was known about prior to the day after the national championship and was communicated with Miller and his family before that date as well. The Dwyer coach is putting out false info as are the Auburn sites that say the same. Once the options were given to the Miller family, they needed time to discuss them and make a decision. Patrick continued to convey his feeling to attend LSU but the father wasn't game for paying the spring semester tuition. Therefore the Miller's contacted Auburn because they were his 2nd choice to see if they were still interested. They were so he applied for early admission to Auburn and then communicated their decision to Coach Miles. It was a completely amicable split and unfortuante situation. Patrick Miller had noo ill feelings towards LSU and if he were given the choice would be at LSU.

Anyone that is familiar with how the compliance department works, would know that there is absolutely no way Miller could be enrolled at Auburn today if he were just told of this situation Tuesday. It takes far longer than 2 days to be told LSU doesn't have a spot, contact Auburn, make a decision and apply for early admission. It's impossible. It takes on average a couple of weeks to be approved for early admission to a university on scholarship. Seeing as their are hundreds of kids enrolling early across the country, NCAA compliance can't just whip up an approved admission in less than 2 days. This is just an attempt on some of the Auburn mods to make themselves look good publicly considering all the failures they've had in recruiting since the Yeldon situation. Pure spin by some not all Auburn mods. The Scout guys made no mention at all of any of the scholarship stuff. They played it purely as a recruiting flip. Do your research people.

The 5 SRs that graduated were Blackwell, T-Bob, Joseph, Stampley and Crappell. I'm pretty sure students who finish their degree during winter intersession are considered spring graduates.

6 other guys to be early enrollees and the staff chose Miller to be the odd man out. I think the staff other than Billy Gonzo prefer the other guys over Miller. I can definitely live with this since they were in full control of the situation and made their choice on who they can afford to cut ties with. Life is not fair especially especially when there are other big name blue chips involved. Poor guy, now he has to play for Auburn. What have they done lately other than win a championship?

No matter how you guys spin this it is at a bad time and just supports Miles looking like he is out of touch. I know this may not be the case but it is what it is. Miles one lost on Monday will come back to haunt and hurt this program unless he gets all the bull shite fixed . I for one no matter how this went down am pissed over this. We need all the 6'7" inch linemen we can get.

Not too long ago the complaint was lack of DT's and DE's. We will be fine in recruiting this year and next year. The staff made their choice on who will be the casualty. It's not like Miller was disgusted after the game, phoned the staff and said peace out. We have 3 linemen and a LS for this class and we had an entire line signed from last class. Miles has been "out of touch" according the fans for the last 4 years and yet he has managed to reel in unbelievable talent. It's getting to the point where players are getting too good and are 3 and done.

Yeah, they did. Regardless of the reason or the timing or anything else, they told a kid they would have a spot for him, and they didn't have a spot for him. Spin it how you want, but that is a mistake, plain and simple.
