Holy hell this is absolutely night and day from the Tyree Adams "highlights" that were posted. Heard is big and strong and quick and appears to have pretty decent technique (at least in comparison to Adams). This kid looks like an absolute slam-dunk high-major LT.

he doesn't seem too athletic for that size

Go watch the Tyree Adams highlights that are on the board rn - Heard moves a million times better than Adams.

Just looked and compared again.
My point about Adams being able to move the same with 30 more lbs. on him still applies.
Purposeful footwork (from coaching) and that extra weight downstairs and you have something approaching Lance. Adams is greener than the shite between C White's teeth but he has the lower body athleticism of Heard.
2 points after watching the tapes again are:
1) Yes, I can see Big Lance contributing first year.
2) Adams is a lock to take the red.

Eta: Whoops. Meant to respond to:

What I see is footwork/assignment discipline which Adams isn't as good at. Might be mental maturity but certainly coaching is a factor and Z flat out a better football player at this point.

Yes. IMO, Heard is talented enough to start at RT next year. I could also see LSU sticking with the Campbell & Jones tackle combo and Heard starting off at guard as previously mentioned.

I think Jones will ultimately be a guard in the NFL.

He’s big and powerful, but really raw. I get the hype, but he’s a long way from projecting as one of the best ever, even at guard

This is only Heard’s second season playing OT, so he is by no means a finished product.

I think this is accurate for sure. I've watched him play several games and I think the assessments that he's not at the "plug-in ready" level right now compared to Campbell and Jones aren't wrong. But he shouldn't be. He's only 3 games in to his Senior year so he'll only get better as the season goes along and he's playing LT for the first time after playing opposite of Campbell last year at Neville (which still sounds insane to me). Yes, he could certainly work on his footwork. But Heard is a MASSIVE human being. I think it's a great sign of things to come regarding the OL when we have TWO true freshman that have spoiled us.

Not a knock on Heard but how did he look in the camps?

Yeah, there are some funny comments on here. People are too used to watching highlight videos. He has elite length and very good footwork. He has a longer lower half of body which makes him have to bend more from the waist against these shorter defenders. Still has to work on bending from knees into a more athletic position, but he can get away with a lot right now.

After this thread I'll temper my expectations on Heard because some other articles I read gave me the impression that he could be a plug and play at RT.

Apparently those articles were sunshine pumping. Very few are really plug and play that 1st year. Elite programs should seek to be in a situation depth wise to redshirt all true FR OL. As the video attests, there is a huge physical difference from what they're used to in HS. And as much as some don't like to admit it, some teams have guys across the line that are better than our guys will see in practice. Most just aren't ready.
Campbell is rare and Jones isn't really ready. He's just better than the alternatives and is likely a guard long term. Just so happens to be very talented and playing up. He will have moments of frustration(for us as fans) as the year goes.

They are freshman starters in the SEC. Both will have struggles.
Disagree on Jones. The only difference between he and Campbell is Campbell had Spring Football and Jones did not.
Full disclosure - I've been a big Emery guy since I saw the camp footage. I like him to be great just as much as Campbell but inside. Everybody wants that big arse that can really move like him inside.

What I really like is that he has the ability to take small quick steps naturally; in my opinion all top flight lineman need that ability.

Lower body athleticism, My Man. Good call.

Agree,

His run blocking will be fine. His feet and his technique did not look quick enough right now to play tackle at LSU. He just seems raw and young.

With that said the second half of the video he did look a little better in his pass blocking technique. His first step in pass blocking seems to need some work.

I’m not a fat guy so I really don’t know shite. What do some of you former lineman think?

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. A lot of his movements and technique don't seem fluid yet, as if he is thinking about every step. He does have the size and what looks like a drive to be dominant. With that being said, a couple more years of training and competition, he certainly can be something special. I don't see day one starts from him, though.

He’s a 5 star lineman according to on3 . That’s enough in itself to tell you he has longtime elite starter potential. They don’t get it right all of the time but usually on the o line they do pretty well
