if miles didn't want benton b/c he was a qualifying liability, then tell him early on or don't recruit him
the offer was pulled to help get randle, bottom line
if the randles had no problem with it, benton would be with LSU right now
now, we have catered to a superstar kid and have shown him with his first experience with LSU......you can get away with more than what others will get away with here

We waited for a kid for 2 years to qualify, from HIGH SCHOOL. Who knows right or wrong, but you will have a kid who is qualified and ready to go, with everything in order. Besides, we won't have any RFJ issues, where he misses an entire season, and then leaves for draft because school's not for him. If Benton can't qualify for LSU, how will he make the grades while there?
I think the program is better off for it

I will be glad when Benton makes a public comment about this.
Then I am sure each one of you will drop this if he tells the truth about what really happened.
Its easy for Bradshaw and even my dad to make comments but both could only say so much on this to be honest.
Sure Bradshaw is mad but don't get it twisted its more to this
Rueben and Benton don't dislike each other best of friends no but I have been around them enough to know
It was more of a mutual respect thing not about competition.
Benton being pulled had nothing to do with my brother but believe want you want
Human nature makes people think the worse in everything but just wait to see if Benton says anything then you will all understand

this isn't about grades....those of you saying that are just saying it to make you feel better about it
the result worked out okay, but the process stunk
if the randles didn't want downs, he would have probably been outed instead of benton

And it appears there is zero other explanation. The visit to AU is just an easy excuse.
I'm sure it goes a little deeper than that, and I don't like the fact that a recruit (or family) can dictate terms...I would say you let that guy walk most of the time. They may have told the Randles that if RR commits, then they'll drop Benton, but if RR takes it all the way to the end, we'll have to protect ourselves by leaving an option for Benton open.
If Benton were qualified, as confirmed by the Clearinghouse, then the decision to call the Randle's bluff might have been the right one. But the guy has claimed he would be on campus for 3 semesters in a row, and hasn't made it.
<Disclaimer...my points are hypothetical in nature and only presented for discussion. I have no knowledge of the actual events, and just presenting this for philosophical debate>

If it weren't for rumors and innuendo, the internet would die.
Thanks for shedding some reason into this discussion.

dmitch, I agree. We're only getting the snippits of interviews that reporters want us to read and that can paint a picture that's not entirely accurate.

Grades?
I think it was more along the lines of Les wanted to guarantee that he got a top WR in this class. With Benton being a question mark, he went with the sure thing.

Exactly, this drama goes on for years, and we stick by him. Yet yank an offer the day of. Look if we want to let a guy walk with grade issues or not getting cleared, that is fine. But it is not like his academic situation just came to light.

Exactly people are flying off the handle about this based on assumptions

Hell, Benton is eligible for the draft NEXT year. Kid couldn't make the grades in HS how's he gonna stay focused enough with the NFL looming on the horizon to stay SEC eligible...

What I gathered from the Randle interview is he was more concerned if Benton came to LSU he would have been forced to beat out his friend Benton.
Posted on 2/5/09 at 7:52 am to GABlueDog
Les hedged his bet with a sure thing instead of possibly losing a 3rd scholly on Benton.
Posted on 2/5/09 at 7:55 am to Rockerbraves
well, they flat out said benton coming to LSU was a factor in his decision
for whatever reason, the randles didn't want benton at LSU...it doesn't mater why IMO
giving miles a decision to make

and by the way, if Saban or Stoops did this shite, LSU fans would be all over their asses
and don't think other coaches and recruiting coords won't use this on future LSU early committs
this DEFINITELY doesn't help our early committ efforts going forward

so its no coincidence that benton just randomly decided to visit AU one weekend with rumors of a silent commit?

Bradshaw said, “from what I was told, (Benton’s) scholarship was pulled from LSU last night.”
Rueben Randle said Wednesday he chose LSU on Tuesday night once he found out Benton was Auburn-bound.
Benton did not answer his cell phone Wednesday night.
Bradshaw said he found out what happened on Wednesday morning — “It wasn’t a pleasant way to wake up,” he said.
“Yeah, it surprised me,” Bradshaw said. “I knew nothing about this. I’ve been asking LSU, ‘Do you really want him?’ The answer was always, ‘Yes, yes, yes.’”
‘Yes,’ for year after year and throughout this recruiting season, until the answer was ‘No.’
