We signed 25 scholarship players in this recruitng class so we CAN’T accept any jucos or transfers. It has NOTHING to do with the 85

Correct, they can process 15 players and still cannot add a acholarship signee.

Louisiana natives could get TOPS assistance if qualified and walk on this coming season while redshirting. If they show promise then join via 2020 class. Michael Williams would be a prime example.

My memory is fuzzy but it seems I read a few years ago that TOPS still counts as a football scholarship if they're on the team. Otherwise, what's to stop a team from having any number of players getting free rides?

I don't think that's true ... Probably 80% of our football team couldn't reach the academic requirements for TOPS coming out of high school

Actually lsu has higher requirements for admission than the lowest level of tops. There are multiple levels though

He can't play his 1st year without counting, but after the first and if he has a 3.0+ gpa, he can play football without counting. The rules:

quote:
15.5.1.1 Football or Basketball, Varsity Competition. In football or basketball, a student-athlete who was recruited (see Bylaw 15.02.9) by the awarding institution and who receives institutional financial aid (as set forth in Bylaw 15.02.5.2) granted without regard in any degree to athletics ability does not have to be counted until the student-athlete engages in varsity intercollegiate competition (as opposed to freshman, B-team, subvarsity, intramural or club competition) in those sports. (Revised: 1/16/93 effective 8/1/93, 1/11/94, 6/20/04, 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11, 1/18/14 effective 8/1/14)

15.5.1.1.1 Exception—Receipt of Institutional Academic Aid Only. In football or basketball, a student-athlete who was recruited (see Bylaw 15.02.9) by the awarding institution and whose only source of institutional financial aid is academic aid based solely on the recipient’s academic record at the certifying institution, awarded independently of athletics interests and in amounts consistent with the pattern of all such awards made by the institution, may compete without counting in the institution’s financial aid team limits, provided he or she has completed at least one academic year of full-time enrollment at the certifying institution and has achieved a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.000 (on a 4.000 scale) at the certifying institution. (Adopted: 10/27/05 effective 8/1/06, Revised: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)

First rules states that athlete counts in football and basketball. The second is the exception for a program like TOPS.

Baseball has benefited greatly by this rule especially with only 11.7 scholarships to spread out.

Conditional on:
A) Hampton attending and Parker qualifying.

and, not or... AND

B) successfully applying for a counter waiver if (a) happens

Don't count on it. We couldn't get one for Stewart or Cole, it's not happening for MLB draft and especially an academic non-qualifier... IF those come to pass.
