I love the 20/20 hindsight that goes on because people hate the recruiting services. There are several hundred, if not thousand players rated 3* each year. Cheery picking a few out proves nothing. Some of these guys were raw athletes, without defined postions that became stars because of coaching and developement they got in college, others were just late bloomers. Happens with kids going from college to the pros all the time.

Rivals can't scout defensive side of ball. Look at the past five years of any publication. The only ones they get right are the undisputed guys like Patrick Perterson,

No one n the planet can convince me that a recruiting site can evaluate talent better then the best coaches in the buisness

Is there anyone on the planet saying the recruiting services do evaluate talent better than coaches? Aren't part of their rankings based on what they hear from coaches, who's offering a kid etc?

The coaches recruit the 4 and 5 star players. You do realize that right? That doesn't mean they just grab the rivals list and go after the top guys. They all have the same film and can see the kids play ETA: Im sure the coaches have access to better film and certainly more access to the players, HS coaches etc). You don't have to be a coach to see that Nkemdiche or Fournette are studs. Funny that if a 5 star flames out you blast the services, but not the coaches that signed the kid.

There are 120 D1 teams, no team, even the elite ones can fill out the roster with just 4 and 5 stars (ok maybe USC ) So they will have to take some 3*'s. Notice the 3*s LSU gets are local kids. The LSU staff probably has better info an access, so they are better able to evaluate which 3* will be Mo Claiborne. But they still turn down dozens of those type prospects. some go on to be stars else where, even if its a lower tier program. Others never make it, but you never hear about the 3*'s that bust because there are hundreds of them.

I get your point but you could just as easily make a list of 3 star busts LSU has signed.

You mean they actually were playing to their rating....totally different arguement. Your actually helping prove, cause according to Rivals, a 3 star should become players....so if 3 stars are busts, it shows they don't know dic

My point was that the coaching staff misses on three star prospects as well. People like to highlight all of the "diamond in the rough" type players this staff has identified and that's fine but let's also point out how they get it wrong too. Just because Mo Claiborne turned out to be great doesn't mean every 3 star prospect LSU signs is being screwed over by the services.

I'd say Clowney was spot on as well.

I am surprised that he is a three star. Look at his offer list and tell me that rivals knows better than the amount of high profile schools that offered. Does not make sense.

What was TM when he committed to us? 4*? Also, I think Mo was only a 2* when he committed and got bumped to 3*'s only after he committed.

As for the 5* busts, most of these even if they didn't live up to their 5* billing (e.g,. Al Woods) were still contributors.

This might have been valid before Alabama lost 4 games in three years. They're clearly getting top talent. I have no doubt Rivals panders to their subscriber base but until they stop winning big, what can you really argue?

Some great posts in this thread.

I disagree with Jones being a 3* but he did come to camp 270 and it obviously affected his play. It's the only thing they had to judge him by this summer. His film should be enough to keep him at 4*. He'll get it back if he lightens up and plays as expected.

I can definitely understand why Neal is ranked so lowly on these sites(all of them). He's short, not particularly fast and just has no "wow" factor to his game. He produces at camps and performs very well and that is a testament to what makes him a guy we should feel excited to have in the class, his drive, advanced skill level at playing the position(compared to most HS kids) and his edge that is given to him by being ranked so lowly. He's mentioned that he is out to prove the doubters wrong.

If there were ever a TE to have top 5, it's Howard. The kid is a stud. One of the best athletes in the class, at any position. The kid is just sculpted to look and perform like the ultimate football player. No Bama bump is necessary for him, not that I believe that bs anyway. The old "Bama bump" crew is at 247 now anyway, aside from Barry Every. Farrell is in a category of his own, so I'll just stop with that.

KG5988, I agree. It doesn't matter what Rivals says it what LSU'S coaching staff thinks. And besides Tim Williams( who isn't committed yet) Melvin Jones is my favorite defensive recruit. I can't remember a kid that athletic at his size and he will have a great career at LSU and contribute on special teams right away.
