What is the difference between a walk-on and a preferred walk-on?

It is my understanding that you get a certain number of walkons that can practice with the team before school starts and the rest of the walkon have to wait until school starts to attend practice.

Ideally, the only real difference is that scholarship players get a check each semister.

It's not bullshite. The difference is you get to report early with the rest of the team and go through two-a-days, which is valuable experience. The rest of the walk-ons report later.

This is the case. You have a 105 man roster that practices in the "preseason" practices. So around 20 preferred walk-ons. Or a few more if you lose any scholarships to sanctions.

Pretty much all kids with the hope of playing college ball have something like this.

Dude, that website looks like it was put together by one of his buddies at school. Give the kid a fricking break.

LSU picks up another preferred walk-on

So do you take a preferred walk on at LSU or a partial scholarship at say Southeastern?

In short would you rather pass on a few bucks for the LSU football experience that likely doesn't include much playtime or go to a school where you should likely play?

I'll take the LSU football experience, especially if I am a LB or DL, you can never have too many.
There's always the chance I could get noticed on special teams and provide depth to a position in case of injury.
Now if I'm a walk-on QB, I'd be ordering my cap and clipboard.

With all the hassle and excitement from Wednesday's signing class, I forgot to mention that Barbe high school quarterback Jared Foster (6'1", 180) will be attending LSU as a preferred walk-on. Foster had several scholarship offers from 1-A programs like LA Tech.

If a player is a preferred walk-on, he is able to start practice in the Fall when the scholarship players report to practice. Preferred walk-ons have the same privileges as full scholarship players. Barbe is a team that is loaded with young talent and LSU will be spending a lot of time in Lake Charles starting two years from now.

LSU has also invited Shawn Burst, a 6'0", 225, linebacker from Northlake Christian High School in Ponchatoula, to attend LSU as a preferred walk-on.
