Obviously, you forgot that 3 of Curley's classes were ranked either #1 or in the top 3.
Kinda hard to forget something that isn't true. If Curely had a #1 class its like some of Bama's claimed National titles. The recruting services were n their infancy in the early 90's, the rankings of players and classes was no where near as complete or accurate as today.

We were discussing this last night and last we saw we were around 16-17. This is good news!

We are still rather low in both Rivals and ESPN BUT both Rivals and ESPN use a grading system that reeks of sloppyness. Rivals lists 20 commitments and fails to average in the ranking of Jeremy Hill. ESPN lists 22 commitments. It is hard to trust a site that can't even get the number of verbals correct much less have us in a virtual three way tie with Auburn and Texas Tech. Scout seems to have the fairest grading system and offers the most up-to-date information. They are open about their point system whereas the others want you to pay for a subscription in order to see how the stars align.

For those questioning why Hill won't count on rivals, the explanation given was that he wasn't playing anywhere last season (JC or Prep School).
It's bunk.
It's bunk.

Like most individuals who follow recruiting, I don't give much attention to the "star" ranking of a player(s).
Actually, that would make you unlike most of the people who follow recruiting; getting too hung up on *'s. So many great Tiger players have been 2 & 3* guys I tend to trust that the coaches know what they're doing. Miles' first recruiting class was barely top 20 yet many of those young men played key rolls in winning the 2007 NC.

RECRUITING RANKINGS DO MATTER… IF YOU KNOW HOW TO LOOK AT THEM

What I see there is we'll probably end up at 7 in the SEC, and that group does about .500 or worse.
One year that low won't kill us, but string a few of them together and the results are fairly predictable as per this analysis. Hopefully, how we recruit vs other schools will be looked at and maybe some changes made, hopefully more aggressive with OOS impact players.
But this class isn't chopped liver either, just not what we're used to.

As an optimist I hate to say it, but there is NO way we finish in the top 10. NONE of the available big-time recruits are anywhere near to committing to LSU.
AND, remember, this is a down year in Louisiana. This was a decent year for getting needs filled, but that is all. AND we ran off a great OT in Miller which I believe was the biggest loss we will feel in a year or two. Don't ever forget that the trenches determine the skill guy's effectiveness...
