My biggest gripe within this program over the years (despite all the great success) is LSU's sacrifices quality execution and consistency at the expense of difficulty. While I do applaud LSU and other teams for taking the risks, more often then not I feel we get hit more than rewarded for that difficulty.

I am okay with LSU pushing the envelope with difficulty on vault. That is the one event in my opinion where judges truly reward athletes more for increased difficulty. The full in general is judged much more harsher than the other 10.0 vaults.

On bars, I guess by biggest issue is Jay is ridiculously stubborn when it comes to dismounts. He will throw out routines with messy and inconsistent dismounts as long as its an E skill dismount. Literally every double layout in the lineup with the exception of Kiya has major form breaks (Alyona, Dean, Dunne). Bryant has a dismount she can't even stick. The bar routines may end up great. but it kinda is all for naught when the dismount drags the 9.9 scores into the 9.8s.

Beam, LSU has a very unhealthy obsession with the switch half leap combination. Instead of focusing on clean leap series and good positions, we are forcing a leap combo that even the elites struggle to hit. Desiderio, Campbell, Kiya, Dunne, D'Antonio, and Ballard all have this leap combo. Literally no one in NCAA does this but. us. We also have unnecessary skills in routines that are not even needed. Like why is Kiya upgrading her beam set? Why does Alyona have the additional front Ariel at the end of her routine? We are just looking for deductions at this point.

Floor is traditionally a strong event for us although we seemed very focused on difficulty as well instead of consistency and clean execution. Last year, LSU was dead on stubborn making Gunter do a double Arabian she clearly wasn't ready to do and forcing all these double backs at the end of routines for the sake of bonus when they already started from a 10. Sometimes I wish we followed the Arkansas model for some of these routines. I would rather downgrade, focus on roundoff technique, clean landings with good chest positions. You can still score well even with not the most difficult routines.

Totally agree with everything you said, particularly about the bars dismounts and switch halfs on beaam (although Campbell obviously is fine with this combo and Johnson does it pretty well but seems to be inconsistent with it). Although for the Alyona front aerial on beam, I believe it's for her front/sideways acro requirement? Unless the Onodi counts as a front acro skill, in which case take the aerial out.

And honestly, I would take Sami out of beam. I know she's a senior and has more than earned her place, but she's just so inconsistent there that I wonder if it's worth it. I would put Alyona in her place (assuming Dunne isn't going to be ready for beam). I honestly think the ideal beam lineup goes Christina, Alyona, Bryant, Dunne, Johnson, Campbell. Durante and Dean have been super clutch for three years now, but to me this lineup has the highest scoring ceiling.

Dunne is specifically one routine on beam that should absolutely be bringing in killer scores on beam but I would replace the switch half with a split jump. She has great flexibility, lines and extension.

Dean and Durante have form issues on beam but they generally hit for the most part so they are able to get at least 9.85 which isn't bad. Dean raised her beam score a little bit this year due to improving the split jump on her leap combo. Durante will always incur about .10 deduction on the leaps because she is flat footed and has soft knees on leaps but everything else is very solid. When you compare those routines to previous ones (Finnegan, Hambrick, Macadaeg, Gnat, Ewing), you can see the difference in form/technique. They aren't bad routines at all, but was just trying to make the comparison.

With all that said, its almost too late for any significant changes as we approach SEC's. I. thought we would use Elena on her best event (bars) and maybe get Dunne a little more involved but neither has happened. LSU will have the live with the majority of its issues until next year at least.

The RQS for teams at present are rather close. It would be a boost if the team could pull out a higher road score this weekend and then give fans a "barn burner" home meet next weekend.....wishful thinking for the Tigers.

Sami is nominated for the AAI award! Who do you all think will win this year? I think it’s between Anastasia Webb, Lexi Ramler and Lynnzee brown

Me personally, I prefer the much easier switch split + split jump on beam. It’s much easier and cleaner. This is what most gymnast do. I know Nyguen at UCLA made this combination look so effortless when she competed.

One thing I will say about this is that ACK, between her full time job as a lawyer and being a mom, she is not in the gym at practice everyday. She choreographs the routines during the summer but for the most part it is Jay, Bugs and Bob who are the coaches in charge of floor, as well as Kennedi Edney this year since she is a manager/graduate volunteer assistant coach. If there is anyone more responsible for the changes in difficulty than anyone else, it would be Jay

I was thinking bugs with the beam and jay with bars. Not so much worried with floor or vault. Does anyone know about chase Brock? No one has answered that yet.

I’m pretty sure they were getting new faces in this week to build more depth.

That said, no Elena on bars may be the biggest mystery. Beam is her weakest event, and we threw her out there despite having a lot depth on that event, and haven’t used her on bars despite the minimal depth on that event

I’m sure there are reasons but it doesn’t make a lot of sense. The bars at 101 wasn’t even that bad.

Good for her. Kind of surprised to see an LSU Senior nominated this year. No hate to our seniors but with none of them having competed AA, having some form issues in some events, as well as not being consistent 9.9+ scorers in every event week after week, I didn’t think I’d see anyone from LSU nominated this year. Especially considering who we’ve had in the past as our nominee that made the top 6: Edney, Finnegan who won, Hambrick, Gnat who won

The AAI awards has a big group at first and eventually narrows down

Its a nice way to recognize a lot of those seniors who were successful in the gym, in the class room and the community.

Yeah I didn’t expect to see any LSU seniors on there either so was pleasantly surprised to see Sami! I know they take into account academics and I believe she’s very strong in the classroom in addition to her gymnastics

Chase warmed up on bars Friday night. So I’m assuming Jay decided to rest her.

So when fans of other teams, and even the LSU faithful say the same things over and over and over, but nothing ever changes, when will it ever? I don’t get it. I love this team and the program so much, so I hate to say anything negative, but some things do remain frustrating. Big difficulty is exciting, but if not done correctly, it’s not easy on the eyes for those of us who love gymnastics, and know what to look for. I personally cringe when I see a last pass double tuck or pike on the floor land with knees in the chest. And this will get hammered at nationals. Just like switch half leaps. Just like piked DLO dismounts. If you haven’t won a national title, why the heck aren’t you studying the teams who do and have, and taking every page out of those books to get there? It just seems a little stubborn to me. I also do worry about the mental toughness overall as well. I hope this is something that will improve under Jay, but I hate to say that Friday was not a good indication of that. The moment they saw the judges were going to hold back, they appeared to start pressing and thinking too hard.

I will be watching everything that is not on FLO. Refuse to pay for that garbage. I look forward to seeing Bryce Wilson and Olivia Orengo (Twin City Twisters) in the Nastia Luikin Cup. I know LSU is not recruiting her, but I love watching her.

Yeah read that last night...which kind of made sense. They felt underscored on bars, and they let that affect them the rest of the meet. Like they lost focus or something on vault too. That’s something you never want to do.

I wonder what he means by formulate what we want to do. Do with what?

I miss watching these. The context is probably there, but they haven't posted the video of it in two weeks.

Sami was definitely underscored on bars. Even Kathy Johnson Clarke made it known that she loved that routine. Judging rears its undesirable side when least expected.
