re: LSU basketball transfer portal watch

Everyone likes to cite the difficult circumstances and "cloud of uncertainty" McMahon had to recruit under last season, but he arguably has far LESS leverage now than he did just a year ago. He now has to actually defend a "record"...which was awful.
Last year McMahon could sell opportunity and success. He was coming off a great season with Murray St. This year he looked completely over-matched, and you can bet opposing coaches are stating that to prospective players.
The 5 years of momentum Wade built ended the day he was fired. However, to his credit, McMahon seemed to recruit well and had regained a bit of momentum/optimism going into the season. That was destroyed by the results. As difficult and "unfair" as it may sound, McMahon is on the hot-seat (or at least should be) and he has to deliver despite the program currently being mired in complete apathy. Made worse by the fact the basketball program he shares the gym with is celebrating a national championship there today...less than two years after getting a new coach.

LJ Cryer in portal. Maybe he wants to come home?

And the most difficult part is that it has a snowball effect. Good players don't want to play for a team that doesn't win and its hard to win without good players. So at some point, the coach has to find a way to break the trend and win with players that may not be the highest quality in order to draw in the elite players necessary to compete consistently. Mcmahon HAS to do that this year or else this snowball will become a full-on avalanche

He's also declared for the NBA draft (while maintaining eligibility).
Basically, by entering the portal he is declaring himself an "unrestricted free agent" for negotiating purposes. Ideally, he would receive feedback he would be drafted. Given his size, he probably won't hear that. So the secondary motive is to create a bidding war between Baylor, the G-League, and other colleges.
The transfer rules combined with NIL are going to send a lot of entrenched players into the portal not because they are unhappy at their current school. But to create negotiating leverage. Does LSU have a bag to pay? We'll see

Has MM met one-on-one with anyone on the target list? Many of the top rated guys on the LSU "interest" list have already met with top programs but I don't see anything about LSU visits. Maybe coverage of mens basketball is being overshadowed by the womens run?

The only place you’ll probably get that info is if a national guy like Tipton or Weingartner (spelling?) report it.
We seem to have no coverage of basketball recruiting or baseball recruiting as far as people being paid to do it are concerned. Rather sad

If he had flat out lied I think you would have seen the entire team bolt for the portal once it opened. Instead things have held together so far, perhaps even better than expected.
If things hold up he can sell the transfers on the returning big men and simply needing guards and scorers. Getting the opportunity to score is a big incentive.
Now we lost out on Primo, but he may be limiting himself to more instant success given that he has been on two heavily losing teams back to back.

How important has the portal become to CBB?

I highly doubt he was selling players on coming here and being complete shite...which is what LSU was 3 games into SEC play. No player is going to sign up with expectations to be on the worst team in the conference.
McMahon was selling players on HIS success at Murray St. I don't think he was telling anyone that the team this past year was going to have that level of success right away, but his prior success was how he tried to earn credibility. He was successful there and coached a top 5 NBA player, so he could do it at LSU. It was a reasonable pitch...then.
Now he has to overcome his poor results. Top mid-major players want to go to programs where they will be showcased and have an opportunity for notable success. Top major conf. players likely want NIL bags (see LJ Cryer at Baylor. Third team All Big 12 and started every game. There is not a better opportunity at another program...yet he is in the portal. It's NIL leverage). Or they want much bigger/different roles.
All McMahon can sell now is hope and PT. His Murray St. success is forgotten and replaced by struggle in a major conf. That's not to say he can't get good players. That's not to say he couldn't drastically improve next season. But the small bit of optimism on the recruiting trail he could sell last season is not there any longer. This is going to be a tougher pitch.

Efton Reid is back in the portal
Should We?
Should We?
Posted on 4/4/23 at 2:28 pm to nicholastiger
No on Efton. Something tells me he will end up at McNeese
Posted on 4/4/23 at 2:32 pm to nicholastiger
Nope he's not good,he wasn't good back then and he ain't any good now. I wouldn't be surprised to see him Murray and Ezewiro at Mcneese
Posted on 4/4/23 at 2:35 pm to cowboy4ever
Murray is way too good to play at McNeese
Posted on 4/4/23 at 2:52 pm to McMahonnequin
Yeah, Murray is good enough to go to a better team. St Johns could be an option for Murray.

Not saying that Murray would go to McNeese, but this past NCAA tournament should show people that good players can now play at any school.

Does anyone know when LSU will start landing transfer commitments? Do we expect anyone else to enter the portal from the guys left on the roster?
Posted on 4/4/23 at 6:32 pm to LSUFan2700
I believe everyone that was expected to enter the portal has. Anyone else would come as a surprise and would be cause for concern. As for as your first question, I'm thinking we possibly see a name or two fall this week. Thats just a guess though
