As PM said in the cover story today, he needs to "go out like crazy and recruit" guys like Coleman who can go 8 innings and give the ball to Ott. Those guys are largely pitching in the minor leagues.. also "he will not be held hostage this year"..I think if he takes too hard a stance, or makes some unusual demand of a signee,, he might see some people go ahead and NOT commit to begin with. PM can't make demands of MLB, and MLB doesnt particularly care about their impact on college baseball. It is better to play the game rather than to try to force some changes in your favor.

Exactly.
Further emphasizing the distinction between baseball recruiting and football/basketball.

I just dont want good pitchers who may get drafted to be driven away bya hard line attitude by PM. Those are the guys we need..NOT the low or no draft guys. You can have a few of those and hope they develop.. but we need the high profile guys. The guys that can come in and contribute as freshman.

Does anyone on here know what the cut off date is this year for signing pro or going to school. Unfortunately last year it was the same day of LSU's registration. I remember PM wanting to nudge MLB to move that to an earlier date this year.

August 15th is now the cutoff date. If it falls on the weekend then it is the following Monday (last year it was the 17th).

Keith Law just listed his latest Top 100 leading into the draft. Bear in mind, this is no indication of where these guys will be taken, but it's a scouts' perspective on the talent we currently have in house and committed to our program. Here are the names and rankings of LSU related players:
20. Anthony Ranaudo, RHP (LSU)
Analysis: Could go top 10 if he shows up healthy at the SEC tournament; could fall out of the round if he doesn't.
30. Delino Deshields, Jr. OF (HS)
Analysis: Another son of a former big leaguer, has been on the radar for a few years -- but between his height (5-foot-8) and commitment to LSU, most teams I spoke with in the offseason thought he wasn't signable. He finished strongly this spring and there's more indication that he's going to choose baseball, and several teams seem to be looking at him in the first round.
38. Kevin Gaussman, RHP (HS)
40. Cameron Bedrosian, RHP (HS)
66. Micah Gibbs, C (LSU)
Analysis: Gibbs slides down to 66 after I received multiple reports questioning his defense, which at one point had been his calling card; I'll get one more look at him in two weeks at the SEC tournament.
80. Leon Landry, OF (LSU)
81. Zach Lee, RHP (HS)
83. Jacoby Jones, SS/RHP (HS)
98. Garin Cecchini, SS (HS)
20. Anthony Ranaudo, RHP (LSU)

So Jones and Cecchini are probably gone, too?
Posted on 5/17/10 at 10:41 pm to Tmon225
that is really funny because I watched Cecchini and Barbe beat Dutchtown in the football playoffs. He was the QB! Also the comparing football recuiting to basball recruiting is stupid. There is no minor league football that prospects can skip college football for!!!!!

Adam, do you think this means he won't go in the first and may be another ZVR? Just would like your opinion on this.
Posted on 5/19/10 at 5:03 pm to Weaver
Deshields doesn't compare to ZVR what-so-ever but as expected LSU fans are never going to let that one go.
Deshields committed this spring so everything with him is fairly new. I don't really expect him to make it to campus, but if he does it's a huge get.
Delino wanted to commit to LSU so you take his commit instantly and don't hold your breath at all. It's a win win situation.

Adam, what I meant was the signability comment. I think colvin and zvr would have gone higher, but because of their signability, they were picked later.
Posted on 5/19/10 at 9:32 pm to Weaver
Oh I understand what you're saying. No, I don't think Deshields signability is nearly as high as Colvin and ZVR were.

Did you mean high?
From what I've read, Deshields is a longer shot to make it here than either pitcher last year.

You are correct. Meant to say he is "more signable". Long day
Don't expect him to be a Tiger.

Taken from Keith Law chat:
Tom (Boston)
Who, if anyone, is likely to drop siginifcantly in the draft because of signability concerns?
Klaw
We’re just starting to get that info from players. Austin Wilson & AJ Vanegas have strong Stanford commitments. Zach Lee is telling scouts he wants to go to school to play football and baseball – that it’s not money, it’s about school

from mlb.com draft chat today:
drabekfan: Hey, Jonathan. Just wondering if you know what way the Blue Jays were leaning with pick No. 11.
Mayo: I haven't quite honed in on them yet, but with a lot of picks, the Jays could do just about anything. They've also got new management and a whole crew of new scouts, so it's hard to know. There's some buzz that they really like Delino DeShields Jr., but I don't know if that's for pick No. 11.

and another one.
otpilot: The Red Sox have recently shifted from college guys to high school/prep players at the top with Casey Kelly, Fuentes, and Renfroe. Do you see that trend continuing, and what high school guys do you think might still be around at No. 20?
Mayo: There should be plenty of arms. Hey, if you want to go the Renfroe/Kelly route, there's Zach Lee, a good looking pitcher who's been throwing really well. He's also slated to play QB at LSU next year and many think he's unsignable.

The QB for Barbe when they beat Dtown was Eric Cutrera.
