I know LSU has a bunch of guys on their roster, who could turn out to be very good options one day. I am just trying to play devils advocate with the this class and the last couple of recruiting classes.
I, by no means, am saying that CPM doesn't recruit well, but all fans know what happened with he who should not be named. He just went after the biggest names, lost them to the draft, and could not recover. I guess he figured that since it was LSU, they would forgo millions of $, and go to college. What a dumbass.
I have tons of faith in Coach Maneiri, as well as Coach Miles. Both bring in hellacious talent.

Mitch Hopkins
This was the guy I was thinking about at LSU Eunice.
he is 8-0 with a 4.14 ERA, pitched 37 innings, given up 41 hits, 22 runs, 17 earned runs, 18 base on balls, 48 strikeouts and 1 triple and 1 hr with 9 doubles. batting average against is 275.

I understand that he knows that, but do teams typically lose out on this much PITCHING talent, in short period of time, and still are able to have good depth?
Top teams do this all the time. Watch this years draft and follow Miami's recruits, they're going to lose at least 4-5 commitments but will still bring in a top 15 class.
LSU was unlucky last year, Colvin and VonRosenberg were not meant to get over 1 million each. The Phillies and Pirates disregarded their slot assignments and did whatever they had to do to sign both.

Question for you jembeurt. Would you have rathered Mainieri to pass on Colvin and VonRosenberg and have them possibly ending up at schools like Ole Miss or Tulane?
Fans didn't like when Smoke let the top talent in LA go and now fans don't like Mainieri signing the top players in LA.
I would love to hear your take on this issue.

Adam, I agree. Happened a lot when Turtle was here too. You have to go after them, in the case you get a guy like Jon Zeringue. We need to get more JUCO/transfer guys to fill in gaps. This used to be a staple with Smoke and Skip. Ryan Patterson, Todd Linden, to name a few.

Redding and Chaffee are not part of the problem with this team. As juco signees they would have been gone after one year here and wouldn't have factored into the plans this season anyway.
Von Rosenburg and Colvin aren't part of the current problem either. The impact of losing them will hit next year when we do not have a true Friday night ace. We are getting a taste of that now with the Ranaudo issues, but they wouldn't have been ready for that this year anyway. Our biggest problem outside of Ranaudo has been the regression of guys that were once key members of the staff like Ross and Bradshaw.

Couldn't have put it any better. If Ross and Bradshaw were even having an "average" to "good" year people wouldn't have even noticed the loss of Colvin and ZVR. It's now that these two juniors aren't producing at all that freshmen are having to pitch more and more in tough spots that veterans usually would occupy.

As far as not recruiting top instate talent, that would be absolutely absurd. I would want CPM fired if he weren't going after the best instate talent. That would be like Les Miles not recruiting Randle and Collins because they were just "too good" to come here. As I previously stated, I think CPM has done an absolutely great job recruiting. I was just wondering how often other elite programs lose great talent and how they cope with it?
With the other comment, I never said ZVR and Colvin were the reason LSU was struggling. Who knows? Let's say they make it to campus. With the way things are going this season, they would have definitely got a chance to start against SEC opponents. Who's to say they wouldn't have struggled also? I just would have liked to have seen it. I also realize that CPM has many backup plans in place when someone goes pro, but losing ZVR and Colvin had to sting last year.
I agree that the problem with LSU this season has been with the lack of ANYONE stepping up. Maybe Ross was very comfortable with the fact that he knew that he was the "third"guy last season. Now that he is supposed to be a key player, he is folding. It seems like he has been pitching well, but always runs into one REALLY BAD inning.
Bradshaw has regressed very badly. I'm not sure what's up with him.
LSU does not have a single pitcher right now that anyone can feel confident aboot, especially with Ranaudo's injuries. Bourgeois has been a pleasant surprise, but he still wouldn't solidify the staff.

I'm not sure I would classify Bourgeois being awful a "pleasant surprise".

I'm not sure I would classify this as being English. And I believe I didn't say that he was a shutdown, number one, no hit guy. To me, having a guy show up from Eunice and pitch on Saturdays, would classify him a pleasant surprise.
Try not to get me wrong, I am not here to flame. I am just trying to get Adam's take on the situation that LSU is in and could be next year. He has a very good pulse on the program, and I would just like to hear his opinion on a couple of issues that have come aboot.

Also, just saw Matulis is going to the pen now.
I'm kind of confused with this move. He really seemed he was doing somewhat well.
Do you think Cotton gets a start now? Mormann? Hell, maybe Bradshaw.

You can look this up on your own time or take my word for it but EVERY major program deals with this. Some more than others...I think two years ago Arizona St. signed about 21 kids and lost 7 to the draft, that's just how Murphy did business. Arizona St. continued to make the CWS...
To answer your last question, for the rest of the year we're going to see a pitchers by committee, going with whoever is hot.

Jackson Slaid is playing at Episcopal in Baton Rouge tomorrow night.
Posted on 5/3/10 at 9:34 pm to Minden tiger
What position does Jackson Slaid play and what time do they play?

I'm not trying to flame or give you a hard time. I know you didn't say he is a shutdown guy, but I wouldn't consider him a pleasnt surprise unless he has pitched well. He came here as a backup plan from Eunice, and he's looked like a backup plan from Eunice. He has no command whatsoever of any secondary pitch and he can't even throw his fastball where he wants it most of the time.
He does have a good arm, hopefully he can develop and pitch well next year.

Jackson will catch and hit 3 hole, don't know what time they play though. Usually 6PM, but with traveling, some games have been moved up to 4PM.

I just looked it up it starts at 6. How is his season going?
Posted on 5/4/10 at 1:10 am to acefal1
His season has been outstanding so far, no numbers for you sadly but he has lit it up the 4 or 5 games I've seen. For average and for power. Great defensive catcher as well and don't think he has reached near his full potential either

Does any one have an updated list of scholorship recruits? We need some pitching. Any word on high school or JC. What about catchers to replace Gibbs?
