I’m actually still confused when people say he needs to “prove himself” on defense. He could manage to be a bit more agile but he fielded .990 in 121 starts in his career. Most of those at 1st base. Only 6 errors. What are people looking for him to prove?

I’m with you. He’s been exceptional, I always think of those plays Tre made that looked impossible. Jared makes them look easy with his length.

Unfortunately there aren't any useful stats for defense at the college level. And even at the major-league level, advanced defensive stats don't normalize until there's 2 full seasons of data. So I imagine it's more about projection and traits than fielding percentage and errors.
That said, Bear plays 1st. With his bat, he just needs to be not-terrible on defense. No one is drafting a 1B for their glove.

Agree. That was more my thought, I’m not sure what he can do to “prove” anything. He’s a fine defender by all accounts. Not much more he can do defensively to prove anything.

He showed tremendous growth this year with the bat, but I think there's still another jump he can make. I hope we get a chance to see it at LSU.

I see that he was named player of the year by a publication called D2 Baseball Insider. A three time first team All-American there. He's certainly been as consistent as you could ask for at his level. Would be an interesting guy to bring in, for sure.

He’s also a specimen. He’s about 6’4 or 6’5

I was just crunching the numbers and wanted to share my thoughts on how it could apply to the portal.
I have a total of 53 players with 27 being pitchers. The draft will bring those numbers down and there a few players that might not be part of our future plans. I think we can still add 2-5 pitchers in the portal.
I have 15 infielders. Once again that number will come down but maybe not a lot. It is very crowded for 5 positions if you include DH here. Luckily some of them guys are versatile enough to move to OF or Catcher if need be and I think that will be the plan. Obviously, Jay is still being active here. I don't see us adding more than two more here.
I have 8 outfielders and that will change as well. Jay doesn't seem to be as active here. That is more reason to believe he will move some of these infielders to the OF. If there is power bat out there, you add them but i believe we could be done here.
I have 3 catchers and we are done here if they all make it to campus. If we don't get all three, a couple of infielders can move here or we go back to the portal.

Judging from his post history he is an avid collector of down votes. I’m guessing he gets a tingling feeling in his micro penis from calling other people idiots, retards, and pussies.
A total clown who isn’t worth wasting your time on.

If a coach is fired or takes a new job after the portal closes are those players allowed to transfer like in football?
Posted on 6/16/24 at 11:47 am to WJP23
quote:Unlikely that he'd do it here, but also went 6-0 with 3.54 ERA 57K/37BB in 56 innings with 2 CG and a no hitter on the bump.

Yes I’m pretty sure Holman didn’t enter the portal last year until after Alabama named their new coach.

I was doing the same mental exercise last night.
From memory we carried 21 pitchers (19 if not counting Noot and Shores) and we used 14 of them semi regularly.
I agree… it appears we have room to add 4-5 more if you account for the recruits unlikely to make it to campus and potential draft risks (this was assuming Herring, Loer and Hayden go pro). Bonus if any of these guys come back.
We are currently following quite a few still
Root and the Ohio state starter Beidelchies are the 2 biggest out there now. Others include Wicker, Alex Canney, Trey Neumann, Ethan Phillips, Alton Davis (is he still in the portal?). I’m sure I’m forgetting a few.
