I would think both of those names appear in the portal soon

I agree. Which is why I think we're pretty active with MIFs in the portal.

Anybody know if he’s coming or not??

I think people see Romero's high ranking and assume he can start at SS day one. Perhaps he can, but he is better known for his bat than his glove. He has also had some shoulder issues hindering his throwing or so I read.
I could be wrong but I don't believe Guidry is even the starting SS on his HS team. I think there is an underclassmen that is the starting SS who is committed to LSU.
If these two make it to campus neither is penciled in as starting SS.
Simon could be at play here but the safe play is to get a veteran SS in the portal with a proven glove that can at least hit decent. That also isn't afraid of the competition.
I think Thompson is option A but we will need some options behind him.

This is a little deceiving. He has played plenty of shortstop in the past and likely could in college.
He's also a pitcher though and for consistency sake, it's easier to keep the same shortstop every game than just plug a new one in on days he pitches.
Plus, Barbe is never short on infielders.

How active we are in the portal is a good question on its own. It would help if the portal was opened after the drafted players have to sign, which is Aug. 1st, I believe.
As it is now, you are going after portal players without really knowing who will make it through the draft. You have to play it safe and go after them but what if you make out better in the draft than anticipated?
The selfish and safe thing is to pursue as many top notch portal players as you can get. As a coach that can lead to some tough conversations with your current players.
How aggressive the coach pursues the portal will depend on the coach. How many players they pursue at each position is an interesting topic on its own.

Tebrake is one that I can't imagine wouldn't be a draft risk, although some guys just think differently.
Posted on 6/13/22 at 3:58 pm to DRock88
I think Tebrake is a guy that could sign, but if it's round 10+ and he's capped at $125k I could see him betting on himself and taking some NIL money for a year knowing that he's still going to get another crack at pro ball.
The signing bonus would take a hit unless he really shows out. But if he knows he's being seen as an org guy rather than a prospect (and a lot of this will depend on who drafts him), an extra year in college will probably be a lot more fun than low A.

I agree. I think the timing makes it impossible to do it any other way. You can't be left with a situation where you lose 2 highly rated guys while they are making their class schedule and now the good portal options are gone so you are left with guys that don't belong stepping into starting roles. I think you sign who you can via the portal and then at worst, you've now got quality depth if those guys do make it to campus.

Mostly all of minor league ball is a less than pleasant experience. Jay is selling the right thing - come here/stay here and I will develop you into a major leaguer quicker than having to sit in the minors. It requires the kid to pass up some cash (which is why NIL helps now) but it may serve as a better long-term decision as far as getting a more weighty contract.

It’s hard for a freshmen to play a great SS in the SEC. You almost have to be pro ready. I just can’t see jay frickin around with this. Both Romero & Guidry will be very good but I’ve also read reports they will have to likely move off SS eventually.
Not to say they couldn’t play it in the SEC next year. But jay has to add some insurance on the infield. He cannot just bank on it

If that kid Day from Missouri enters the portal I hope we can get him. He's good with the glove and can hit.

Guidry was starting shortstop with Owen Galt at 2nd until guidry hurt his back and had to sit a couple games, when he came back and for the playoffs he played 2nd. He can play either and 3rd very well.

Not sure in Romero but guidry absolutely could play ss but like project said, he is also a pitcher and it's hard to not have same starter at ss every game.
I still think Thompson is fine as he showed at the end of the year. But I do hope we get an option from the portal too.

And, I really hate to say it, but we'd be fine with another pitching coach.
Gasp........but the rant applauded his work with this talentless staff.

I think you need a sure thing transfer SS that you know you can rely on. And just move the guys around him if they hit well enough.
If Guidry or someone else wins the job, you know you are in good shape. But you need that insurance.

Burning some tape of the lesser known guys. Really like DJ Primeaux, LHP out of Central.
