Let's take a look at the five covid senior spots.
We all agree Dugas is a lock. Lucky to have him.
I would say Beloso is a safe based off the fact that Johnson had him starting DH before his injury. I'm not sure he will be able to contribute with this roster but will probably still make it.
I like Merrifield as a backup infielder if for no other reason than to bring cookies. With Pineda gone and Carter on the fence it makes sense to have a solid infielder their as insurance.
Bollman, I'm not so sure about. He was ranked higher than Gervase as an incoming JUCO last year. I don't know how accurate that ranking was because Gervase was a late bloomer. I saw Bollman pitch in the fall and he didn't blow me away. In fairness he could have been dealing with his injury in the fall, I don't know. If I were to rank our current roster of pitchers, I would probably put him towards the bottom. So does it make sense to keep him if he is towards the bottom? If we keep 19 or 20 pitchers on our roster next year. I would be tempted to get those pitchers from the 35 and just use the five covid spots for position players.
Of course those five don't exist right now, only 3 if you don't count Bollman. Gio hasn't signed with another school yet. Do we bring him back? Do we scan the portal for more covid seniors? I would be tempted to see what infielders are out there.

No, the argument is Merrfield doesn’t affect anything on the 35 man roster.
So when you have to cut 8, 9, 10 guys, are you keeping Cranford over:
Travinski, Jobert, Garrett Edwards, WHOEVER …
No, you aren’t. He’s going to take someone’s spot that actively did not try & transfer. And a player he is likely not better than

I'm not sure where the thought of guys in the portal coming back is coming from when the guys that went in the portal went to look for somewhere to go get playing time. They aren't coming back to LSU because they will be good backups. They want to go somewhere that they can go play.

Bianco came back, a little while back.
I think guys enter the portal, just in case, because they don't know how things will shake out. I believe they lose their scholarship when they enter but I don't believe Gio was on one. If Gervase, Pineda, and Tebrke stay with LSU, or maybe just one of them, than Gio would have been forced out. They weren't and now there is room for Gio unless we would prefer the portal. Of course you could be correct, perhaps Gio is looking for playing time somewhere.
I would certainly like to have five solid covid seniors but I don't know how good the pickings are at this point. Personally I think Jay finds two more infielders that are at least solid with the glove and keep Dugas, Beloso and Merrifield.
Any other portal additions would have to be big names, like Skenes.

Yep, I’m not sure why people act like above average Covid seniors are growing on college trees across the country. There is only one class of players to pull from for each year. Dugas and Beloso are probably the cream of the crop in that category, both of whom possibly would have been gone by this point but for injuries. The vast majority in that category I imagine would either be starters for their team and thus not willing to come be insurance for LSU or making a lateral move riding pine on one team to do the same at LSU. Jay may find one more to fill out our 5, but Merrifield will undoubtably have a spot on next year’s team unless he gets selected for the Next Food Network Star.

Bianco didn't have near the talent to compete for a spot with that this team has when he did that.

I'm just saying when Gio entered the portal, he was one of nine covid seniors. He had nothing to lose by entering the portal. Turns out we have an opening for him. Can we find someone better? Does Bollman stick around? Does he want to come back and probably ride pine? We don't really know.
Posted on 7/21/22 at 11:19 am to N2daWild
does GIO want to come back and ride pine. No, that is most likely why he is in the portal.

The reason could be Jay told him that if Pineda, Gervase or Tebrake don't all go pro, I won't have a spot for you. Since you're not on scholarship it probably would make sense if you enter the portal.
It probably didn't go down like that but it's not impossible.

He did an interview after he entered the portal saying the decision was made to give him the best chance to go somewhere and play his last year of college eligibility.

Interesting tidbit from Gervase's interview on Mahtook's show. Asked for a pitcher to keep an eye on for next year, he singled out Cale Lansville. While not as highly rated as Noot or Shores, he was our highest rated recruit from last year's class. Gervase said he had lingering injuries pretty much all season and was never 100% but he's been busting his butt and will be one to watch next year.
Don't want to sound hyperbolic too soon, but we will have more pitching options on the staff next year than I can ever remember us having.

It's never too soon to be hyperbolic on TD. You go for it. Natty is in the bag.

Yep he’s becoming an afterthought but I love his potential. Morgan singled him out as someone very hard to hit in the fall. He showed some good stuff in an inning or two at home again at La Tech where I really started to see some stuff. Slightly deceptive arm angle, was up to 93-94. There’s something there.

Was a Top 100 overall PG recruit. Interested to see what he can bring next season. Bio on him said he was going up to 94 with a big time curveball back in summer of 2020.

I watched Lansville in the fall and met his girlfriend in the stands of one of the scrimmages. Nice girl from Arkansas down to watch him pitch.
I like Lansville.
