Will he be available for 2020 or will he be a 2021 guy?

He’s not coming in at semester break if that’s what you mean. He will be here in the fall, or in a professional org.

It gets asked every year if we have a juco kid commit in the fall, I wouldn’t beat yourself up over it.

Looks like Beck Way was a reliever at Belmont Abbey (NCAA Div. 2) since he had 0 starts, 3.98 ERA. NW Fla State had one of the best team ERAs last year so that should boost his skills nicely.

Here is a short write up on Beck Way from Prep Baseball Report. He is the 4th ranked JUCO prospect on their list: LINK

quote:

Way has had some hype around his name, thanks to his ability to run his fastball up to 96. The ball explodes out of his hand, as the arm action is fast and electric. To go with his plus fastball, he also features a low-to-mid 80s breaking ball with bite that he throws consistently enough to keep hitters from sitting fastball. The changeup comes from a similar slot with the same arm speed, disguising the fastball and making it look a tick harder than it already is. Although still somewhat of a wild card after pitching 20 innings his freshman season at Belmont Abbey College and logging more innings in the Cape Cod League (2-2, 3.29 ERA with 18 SO, 11 BB in 13.2 IP) this summer, Way looks poised for a breakout sophomore season.

ETA: It looks like this kid was only about 5'11" 145 going into his Junior year of HS. By the time he graduated he was 6'2" 160. He's now up to 6'4" 200. He was originally in the 2017 class, so he would be coming in as a redshirt Junior.

I believe Wednesday is the beginning of the early signing period. So we may see LOIs start to roll in that day. I know things can remain in flux for the class pretty much through August, but it's still a milestone each year.

I also think we might be close to another JUCO commit for this class.

I aggregated Way's fall stats for NWFS. He threw 12.2 innings this fall in a combination of games against other JUCOs and one outing against South Alabama.

IP - 12.2
SO - 24
BB - 2
SO% - 46.2%
BB% - 3.8%
WHIP - .947
ERA - 3.55

Those are excellent numbers.

ETA: Here is a short article from the local paper in PA where he played HS baseball: LINK

If you're ever wondering how LSU is viewed nationally as a baseball program, this is a good indication. It's a big deal to them that one of their own committed to us to play baseball. That's a good feeling.

Hope Money signs with Tigers not meaning Detroit.

Milligan is a head scratcher. Kid has never made all district. Goes to a bad baseball school. I don’t see it.

From N2daWild in another thread:

quote:

I am usually jumping ahead of myself but I have a question for you, if you don't mind. It looks like we will lose a lot of pitchers from the 2020 team. Of the new signees, which pitchers do you see impacting 2021, assuming they are not drafted?

We know for certain we will lose Beck and George, because they're seniors. I feel pretty confident that we will lose Henry and Fontenot. AJ Labas would probably go with a good year. And then Vietmeier, Kaminer, and Storz would probably all go if drafted (speculation of course).

As far as the new recruits that would fill those gaps, we would hope to keep at least one of Money, Floyd, and Murray. And hopefully at least two of Millas, Fowler, and Way. As far as projecting starters vs relievers, I have no idea.

And I'm still hoping we add a JUCO LHP to the class before it's all over.

I feel good about the other guys in the class making it to campus, Mott, Hellmers, Edwards, Coleman, and Rice.

One wildcard is Brody Drost, who could be a two way player. But we're still gun shy about letting that happen for some reason, so I'm waiting to see where he's projected when he steps on campus. My feeling is OF.

Drost is definitely being recruited for his bat
Not sure if he will pitch or not, PM usually doesn't give them much of a chance to do both

When you didn't have a lefty on staff last year, makes you wonder why Cabrera didn't at least get some more time on the mound to see if he could have helped.

One of those early commits...as a 15-year-old freshman with size. Was good during travel ball before high school. Haven't seen him do much at St Louis. Maybe he's got through the roof measurables. Its what the coaches see, I guess.

Never understood why baseball makes offers and accepts commitments so early.
15 years old is before they even fully develop

Thanks Project, much appreciated.

I think we can add Walker and Hilliard to the draft eligible pitchers. We will need a strong 2020 class for depth in 2021 and for starters in 2022 when we lose Marceaux and Hill. Let's hope the draft is kind to us.

Getting back to 2020. I am really excited about this year coming. Our pitching is talented, deep and experienced. We have a lot of power hitters and a hitting Coach.

That 15yo can play and he’s gonna develop just fine.

I don’t know about giving offers early, but when a kid can play you know it.

Hell, how many 16yo are in MLB programs already?

Baseball is way different than other sports.

The 2021 SS from St Paul you could have offered at 12. If you know it, you saw it with him that early.

It looks like LSU picked up a commit from Tucker Toman, the son of Middle Tennessee head baseball coach Jim Toman. He's an infielder in the 2022 class. He was previously committed to Oregon.

Apparently, per the thread a little ways down the page. I've kind of faded out of following football recruiting like I used to, so I didn't know there was a connection.
