What was the competition like in the south Florida league and the Florida collegiate league.

I’m trying to get a read on improvement. Was there much SEC caliber pitching there? Or were these guys facing midweek kind of pitchers.

I think the Florida league was ahead of the South Florida League in terms of pitching, but that's mainly because Leftwich and Mace from UF were both in the Florida League.

Our guys didn't face the caliber they would face in the SEC on a regular basis in either league. But there is still reason for optimism.

The average on balls in play in the SFCBL was .320.

Here are the LSU guys BABIPs:
Doughty - .486
Beloso - .458
Arnold - .385
Dugas - .289 (surprised his was this low considering his OPS)

In the majors, BABIP is a luck indicator. A guys hits just might not be falling. (It can also indicate low exit velos in the absence of a tool to measure that) But as you go lower down the levels of play, BABIP can be an indicator of talent relative to competition. (Mostly as an indicator of quality of contact).

So while our guys may not have faced great competition. They still did what they were supposed to do and dominated it.

I also tend to look at summer stats in a similar way to Spring Training stats for the majors. Good stats lead to optimism, bad stats are discarded.

Though, Sanford's and Bianco's strikeout numbers give reason for concern.

ETA: Crews is playing right now in game 2 of a best of 3 for the Florida League championship. Brayden Jobert is also on his team. He's committed to play at LSU after he plays this upcoming season at Delgado (attempted to transfer directly from Nicholls, but the waiver process wasn't going to work). Game 3, if necessary, will follow game 2. If Crews' season wraps up with Game 2, I will try to post his final stats this afternoon. Otherwise, it will be next week.

Thanks.

And I’ll take .289 from Dugas for sure especially with a high OPS.

Crews hitting 314 2 HR 10 RBI
Jobert hitting 277 1 HR 9 RBI
Both with approx 50 at bats

Crews' and Jobert's team won game 2 earlier today, making game 3 unnecessary. It's still showing on the schedule but I assume it won't be played.

Here are Crews' final stats, including the playoff games:
.322/.440/.475 3 2b, 2 HR, 75 PAs
14.7% K Rate
16% BB Rate
4 Multi Hit games (in 20 played)

He started off the summer season very slow. But he really turned it on late. Similar to Doughty in that regard, but Doughty didn't start as slow and also turned it up even more.

ETA: Crews also had two outfield assists, throwing guys out at the plate. One from RF and one from CF.

Has nothing to do with Crews or Joubert, but I think a lot of people forget how high Manieri was on Zach Arnold coming in before the surgery. I think he takes over a middle infield spot if Cranford can’t find the bat or he can play 3rd base. Infield should be fantastic next year along with the starting rotation and bullpen

Picked up a commit from Blake Mitchell. 2023 out of sinton, tx

quote:

Blake Mitchell is a 2023 C/RHP/3B with a 5-10 150 lb. frame from Sinton, TX who attends Sinton. Slender young athletic build with plenty of room to get stronger. Left handed hitter, loads back well in his swing with a well timed shift into contact, short and quick hand path to the ball, squared up the ball hard and consistently with some lift out front, pull to mid field contact, showed surprising power for his size and age, really projects well as a hitter as he gets stronger and more physically mature. 7.55 runner, sets up well behind the plate and shows lower half flexibility and quickness, athletic and comfortable in his overall actions, pretty sound footwork overall, hands are soft and confident receiving the ball, arm works well and will continue to improve in overall strength. Also pitched, high leg raise delivery, short stride out front that creates downhill angle but that will throw off his arm timing at times. Fastball topped out at 81 mph, mostly straight, still developing feel for curveball release point. Interesting young athlete who really hit the ball well at this event. Good student. Named to the National Underclass South Top Prospect List.

Perfect Game

Thank you, adding him to the list now

ETA: Same HS as 2022 RHP commit Wyatt Wiatrek. That school just had another 2022 kid commit to Alabama as well.

Looks like LSU got their first 2024 commit in Bryce Navarre, LHP from Barbe.

I've been away since last week without being able to update if anything happened. There is a commitment on Perfect Game being reported for a 2023 kid in Pennsylvania. The kid even tweeted about it. But he's not followed by, or following, any of the LSU coaches on twitter. I'm waiting to see if more comes out on it before I put him on the list.

ETA: I've added Gavin Chillot to the 2023 commit list. He's an infielder from Pennsylvania.

The 2021 MILB draft will start on July 11th 2021. That's about a month to a month and a half later than usual. This will increase the pool of draft eligible sophomores overall. The only LSU player affected is Alex Milazzo, who will now be draft eligible after this upcoming season.

Min 20 rounds
Up to possibly 30
Milazo will go on defense alone
That should get the roster back to normal
Several draft risks in recruiting class too

Baseball America put out a ranking of on campus classes and has LSU 2nd behind Miami. First in the SEC. The article claims to list each team in the top 25's full class but only shows ten players from each class.

Reading in the local St Louis paper today that the top pitcher in Vandy's 2021 class is graduating early and joining them in January. Christian Little from CBC in St Louis. This is a by product of no roster limits for this season, as well as the change to counting academic money and baseball money separately.

We seem to be looking at a ton of JUCO arms for that class. I guess we're anticipating a lot of turnover on the pitching staff.

ETA: After looking at next year's beginning roster (currently at 52 players I think), we are going to have to sweat over 20 guys entering pro ball. I think we will have to go after a JUCO catcher, as both our incoming freshmen will be draft risks (Moller is almost assuredly going pro IN MY OPINION) plus Milazzo and Wyeth will be draft eligible.

I mentioned we are looking at a lot of JUCO arms, we may need to add 3 to 4 of them. We're targeting lefties and righties, and rising juniors and sophomores.

For roster stabilization, getting a JUCO catcher that plays his freshman year this upcoming season might be the best move.

LSU picked up a 2023 commit from the KC metro area named Kaiden Wilson.

ETA: Wilson is a LHP that has recently been touching 90 mph.

I found former LSU commit Marcus Mott on the roster for Temple College, a JUCO in Texas. After he decommitted he didn't really make a public commitment anywhere. I just happened to run across his name looking for fall stats.

I'm trying to determine if I want to put together a list in this thread of the different JUCO pitchers I know we're looking at. I'm hesitant to mention guys before they commit because so often it doesn't work out.

I am torn. Even commits are not "sure things" in any sport, much less baseball. The draft is always a threat as well as just having problems with distributing the ridiculous 11.7 scholarships.
thanks for all of the information you feel comfortable sharing.
