I’ve been looking into the recruiting class more than usual lately, and I was wondering what your thoughts on Brandon Kaminer were. He seems to have immaculate control (7 walks in 60 ip) but his ERA is 4.8. It’s a little disconcerting when a JUCO pitcher is giving up those kinds of numbers, but I don’t know if his stuff just naturally gets hit or if batters were just on it.

Hey Project in your opinion when the time comes does P. Money make it to LSU?

I wouldn't say he's as big a longshot at Crews, but I'm not confident.

The biggest things are that he's LHP, he doesn't walk a bunch of guys, and he's low to mid 90s. His strikeout numbers are pretty good too.

To me it means the stuff is there, he just needs a little more refinement. A lot times we get guys from JUCO with huge walk numbers and they rarely get it straightened out here. I feel like Kaminer will be able to contribute out of the bull pen though. Maybe a start here or there.

When you see numbers like that, particularly for a starting pitcher, the first thing you think of is whether the coach doesn't have a tendency to leave his pitchers in too long.

And if you look at their team stats, what you'll see is that's likely true. It looks like they played mostly 7-inning games and they really didn't use the bullpen much at all. Not to mention that team hit .341 with 82 home runs in 54 games and scored 420 runs (7.8 a game), so he's probably pitching with a sizable lead and under orders to just throw strikes and let the opponent get themselves out.

I wouldn't worry too much about his ERA. He was the ace on a 44-10 team and the stuff is clearly there.

Blake Money is from outside of Nashville. Luke Leto in the 2021 class is from Michigan.

My mistake buddy but in any case does Money have a strong shot at making it to campus?

Very little shot. My daughter goes to school with him at Summit and knows him well. He just wants to make it through HS and get drafted.

Any idea what infielders we added to the 2019 class? Mainieri said they were released from letters of intent from other schools and haven’t signed yet

From Mainieri’s interview:

quote:

They're both, the two players we're going to get were both drafted. They were scheduled to go to other schools, but the schools they were scheduled to go to, the head coaches were fired, so they asked for their release from their national letters of intent. We've got a couple commitments from kids we think are going to be really good players.

This should give me something to work on. I do think one of them is the juco kid from California. I think he was committed to CSUN, who fired their coach, and was drafted as well. Zack Mathis is the name.

But I will dig. Hopefully one of them would be a high schooler and notboth JUCOs. But I wonder who gets processed now.

ETA: Can someone link the interview, I'd like to read it.

I just looked up Mathis' numbers in JC ball. I can live with this guy if he's one of the two. Kid hit 46 doubles in two years of JC ball, more walks than strikeouts, home run production went from 4 to 10 from freshman to sophomore year and 127 RBI in 100 games tells you he's pretty good in the clutch.

I dunno what happened to him in the Northwoods League last year, but a career .352 hitter in JC ball at least has a chance to be decent. And a career .948 fielding percentage for a middle infielder is playable.

He's OK. I imagine he could keep Hal Hughes out of the lineup.

Zack Mathis - Northwoods league

Not entirely relevant to this, but still related, CJ Willis is absolutely raking in the NWL right now. And Cade Doughty is on an unreal tear in his league.

Thank you. Still a conspicuous absence in the catcher discussion.
